This is from an interview with the head of markets for a major tax and auditing firm. I'm stumped.
Auf welchen Markt trifft XXGmbH derzeit? Wie ist Deutschland unterwegs?
Wir befinden uns in einer Übergangsphase. Technisch ist die Rezession überwunden. Viele Indikatoren zeigen, dass wir aufsteigen. Die Kreditklemme ist vorbei, Unternehmen können sich wieder mit Kapital versorgen. Die Stimmung aller Marktteilnehmer wird besser. Allerdings trauen die meisten Unternehmer dem Braten noch nicht. Dieses Abwarten wird noch sechs bis neun Monate andauern. Im vierten Quartal des laufenden Kalenderjahres aber sollte der Aufschwung für XXGmbH spürbar werden. Allerdings dürfen wir keinen weiteren Schock auf den Finanzmärkten bekommen. Dies würde die Entwicklung stoppen. Unsere Grundhaltung ist daher verhalten optimistisch.

: Both version I agree with; they're not talking about any specific market but general economic conditions, using "market" as a catch-all. This is evident from the following paragraph dealing with the whole economy's outlook not any specific market. Regards

What sort of market is XXX up against at present?
Is this too colloquial? It is an interview, after all, and "den Braten riechen" is also a bit "salopp".
I think "treffen" gives an idea of confrontation, even of challenge, it is just ever so slightly belligerent or at the least competitive in as sporty sort of way.
