Technical brochure describing benefits of a particular hydraulic motor
Extract from technical brochure: "Construction à axe brisé des moteurs [marque, modèle], les pistons ne possèdent pas de patin, ceci permet de transmettre 90 % du couple nominal au démarrage et d’effectuer une très grande plage de variation."
This is an axial tapered piston bent-axis design of hydraulic motor. My translation continues (of the above): " pistons without pads allow the transmission of 90% normal torque at start and offer wide variation." [Or something like that]
My question is "patin". In the French it is used in the singular here. My "pads" doesn't seem right. How do we use "patin" in terms of a condition?
Insights please. Someone put me right - thanks.

Perhaps the issue is purely grammatical: "ne possèdent pas de patin" follows a French rule: singular because 0 can be considered just as well as singular, and because if there were any pads, each piston should have one pad, ie "un piston sans patin", "des pistons sans patin"
