Spanish term

rendimiento

Spanish to English Tech/Engineering Construction / Civil Engineering paint

Discussion

Vianely Gambin May 8, 2012:
Something like "must be used with a yield non inferior to the specified by the manufacturer".
Lucy Williams (asker) May 8, 2012:
So, something like "using no less than the yield specified by the manufacturer"?

yield

Para citar un ejemplo, si el fabricante promete que un galón de pintura acrílica, cubrirá 20 mts de superficie ya preparada para pintar, a ésta no debe agregársele agua para cubrir un área mayor, pues lo que ocurriría sería una cobertura deficiente y un deterioro a destiempo.

performance

I think this is performance rather than coverage, which I understand to be cubrición

Paint performance can be impacted by ambient temperature and the time of day the paint is
applied. Contact the paint manufacturer for specific instructions on applying the coating for
maximum results. Most companies can be contacted via a toll free number or website for
specific information. Consult your retail store for information.

disagree rokotas : Litteraly you are right as to the translation of the word 'rendimento', however it is clear that here 'rendimento' means to apply a certain amount of paint per area unit. Rendimento is widely used with this concept in the coatings industry.

I have done a lot of translations containing both the terms "rendimiento" and "cubrición" in the same text requiring different translations, hence my answer

coverage

"Coverage" is the normal word. "Yield" is a calque of the Spanish (and in John's bilingual reference the English version is clearly a translation of the Spanish). "Rendimiento", in relation to paint or varnish, is the number of square metres it will cover per litre. The equivalent in English is coverage, measured normally in square feet per gallon (sometimes m2/litre)

"El rendimiento sugerido como imprimante (en dos manos) es de 0,5 lt/m2 aproximadamente."
http://www.megaflex.com.ar/complementarios-imprimantes-pintu...

Very few results for "paint yield", and of these, many are irrelevant ("yield" is a verb) or translated. Hardly any are to do with applying paint or varnish in buildings.
https://www.google.es/search?q="paint yield"&num=100&hl=es&p...

By contrast, plenty of relevant results for "paint coverage":
https://www.google.es/search?num=100&hl=es&q="paint coverage...

"Divide the paintable wall area by 350 (the square-foot coverage in each gallon can) to find the number of gallons of paint you need for the walls."
http://www.dummies.com/how-to/content/estimating-how-much-pa...

"Paint Coverage
How much paint will I need? This is a common question whether you're thinking about changing a colour scheme or simply giving a room a new lease of life. [...]
Paint Coverage
Area covered by 1 litre of paint
Matt Emulsion 12.5-16 sq m
Silk Emulsion 11-16 sq m
Eggshell 15-16 sq m
Gloss 15-16 sq m"
http://www.diyhowto.co.uk/projects/paint-coverage.htm

You can say "coverage rate", but "coverage" alone will do:

"A superior quality polyurethane water based varnish for use on interior wood surfaces.
TECHNICAL INFORMATION:
Theoretical Coverage:
20-27 m²/3.7L (220-290 ft²/3.7L)
Recommended # of coats:
2-3 at recommended coverage"
http://www.generalpaint.com/content/GeneralPaint/Html/Genera...

"Each pack of FlameProof Fire Retardant Varnish contains sufficient material to treat NOT MORE than 20m² of flat timber area at the recommended coverage rates."

I've just seen Nikki's answer. I don't think this means performance. "Rendimiento" is measured in area per litre, like coverage, but I don't think performance is. In the documents Nikki cites, the performance of a paint (or varnish) refers to a broader concept than how large an area it covers, which is what "rendimiento" means: it includes how well it lasts and other indicators of quality. "Cubrición", in "buena cubrición, buen rendimiento", surely means how well it covers the surface, not how large a surface it covers.

In the source text here, "un rendimiento no menor de los especificados" refers to how it is to be applied: if the manufacturer specifies that its "rendimiento" or coverage is, say, 0.5 litres/square metre, it is not to be applied at a lower coverage than that: each litre is to cover not less than 0.5 litres. To put it another way, it is not to be applied more thickly than the manufacturer specifies.

Thanks, Lorena :)
agree rokotas : Although both 'yield' and 'coverage' are widely used in the coatings industry, and although 'yield' is litterally more correct, in this case 'coverage' is more suited.

Thanks, rokotas! Perhaps I was too categorical in dismissing "yield".
