Classification is both process and end result (Bailey, 1994). A typology is similar to a classification but is held to be characteristically multidimensional and have named cells. In contrast, a classification could be on one attribute only and have its cells defined only by levels of that attribute (Bailey, 1994, p. 4). A typology has been defined as “a purposive, planned selection, abstraction, combination and (sometimes) accentuation of a set of criteria with empirical referents that serves as a basis for comparison of empirical cases” (McKinney,1967, p. 218). The terms typology and taxonomy are sometimes used interchangeably, but the distinction generally made is that taxonomies, most common to the biological sciences, are likely to be empirically determined, based on numerical techniques, and hierarchical with each vertical level of abstraction embracing all levels below it.
