This is a text about wampum:
"Les wampums sont des objets, d’abord symboliques, qui marquent des engagements politiques, diplomatiques et sociaux. S’ils font office de ***traces indicielles*** qui marquent les liens unissant plusieurs partis, ils trouveront rapidement une fonction de monnaie d’échange dans les colonies."
Merci d'avance.

tokens, indicative markers
they are used as tokens, indicative markers of the ties which unite various parties...
I feel this gives a sense of what the sentence is trying to say - they were originally not really money, just tokens or pledges which then became used as a sort of currency.
I agree with one of the other respondent that I don't think it is intended as a technical term

Anglofrancais
: I disagree that this link is helpful. The source text is talking about early forms of money in colonial times. Certainly, if Wyley can confirm that the text was written before 2014, the reference isn't to TRACE International's index

: This is about the pre-monetary significance of wampum.

Early indexes
Traces indicielles = traces of an index/signs of an index, better put as early indexes
The term refers to the fact that the wampum were the early index, that determined relative values between the colonies.
I am confident that 'Trace Indicielle' is NOT a technical term in this context.

: No, once it became an "index", rather than an "indicator", it had lost its affective meaning and become a type of money.
