faute
in sports (which includes gambling :)) a "foul ball" would be "balle fausse", a false start (another error) would be "faux depart", and a "foul" (which could be used interchangeably with "strike", which comes from baseball, where the batter and the team are penalized for strikes) would sound best translated as "faute", like in basketball or soccer... :)
