: I think this rather turns it the wrong way round: it is the discharging of the electricity that produces a spark (rather than the other way round); that's certainly not the way the source text expresses it. / Not exactly

the idea of the ST is: the static electricity potential keeps rising until reaching a danger level where there's a spark that will lead to the discharging to an earthed conductor (i.e. the spark allows the discharging)
