Some objects have spots of indetermination, they are unfinished, as for example literary characters, of which not all parts are described, or mathematical functions which for their fullness or saturation need arguments, or the just visible second plane outlines in the painting “Vault” (30×100 cm, 2014), or non finito sketches and partially damaged museum object (destrukt) which are in some sense not full, incomplete.

When we look at renown works of contemporary painting, it is easy to notice that many of them show something vaguely or even show nothing. Luc Tuymans' pale paintings, blurred works by Gerhard Richter or Wilhelm Sasnal's cut canvas can be actually qualified as sketches (free, hasty works of an expressive character), non finito (empty or partly unfinished pictures) or even self-destructs (works that are splashed, cut, etc.), in other words, “incomplete”, imperfect works. Concern expressed by contemporary artists about this “deficiency”, is not always understood by the audience

Na skutek uszkodzeń odniesionych w latach okupacji 1940-1945 rzeźba zachowała się jedynie w postaci destruktu przedstawiającego sobą pozbawiony głowy, skrzydeł i łap korpus orła. An unfinished work is creative work that has not been finished. Its creator may have chosen never to finish it or may have been prevented from doing so by circumstances outside of their control, such as death. Such pieces are often the subject of speculation as to what the finished piece would have been like had the original creator completed the work with their own hand. Sometimes artworks are finished by others and released posthumously. Unfinished works have had profound influences on their genres and have inspired others in their own projects. The term can also refer to ongoing work which could eventually be finished and is distinguishable from "incomplete work", which can be a work that was finished but is no longer in its complete form.
There are many reasons for work not being completed. Works are usually stopped when their creator dies, although some, aware of their failing health, make sure that they set up the project for completion. If the work involves other people, such as a cast of actors or the subject of a portrait, it may be halted because of their unavailability.
