Polish term

ciemnogród

Discussion

hanysz (asker) Jun 19, 2012:
Dorota Zegarowska Jun 18, 2012:
A może poda Pani kontekst, łatwiej wtedy będzie
Dorota Madrzyk Jun 18, 2012:
Backward town występuje dość często:
"I think the house was in Abbeville. While filming there, Julia quite admirably made national news by protesting the fact that a local restaurant refused to serve a crew member who was black---I believe she was thrown out of the restaurant in the process. Abbeville is pretty well known as one of the most backward towns in the state. I've been there a few times and find it pretty creepy..."

Backward

Peer comment(s):

agree A.G. : (dla propozycji bez miasta: to stan umysłu (i raczej nie ignorancja) backwater mind etc.

agree Dorota Madrzyk : ale ja bym raczej dodała town, bo pytający mówi o mieście. Podaję parę linków w dyskusji.

Ignorance City

As a proper name you could use this option I think. It is not a real name though.

It might be too explicit though. You can put some make up on it and call it Ignorantia (a Latin word), or something like that.

hick town, walmart town, hillbilly town,

Hick Town
A southern, mostly redneck town that has few offerings other than simply being a community that knows and cares for each other above all else.

Usually characterized as:

A town with one, if any, stop light.

Most of the inhabitants drive trucks or other oversized SUV

Cow/horse pastures everywhere

If you're lucky, 2 convenience stores, a gas station, and a liqour store

One road in and out

Usually full of Hicks, Rednecks, Country boys, and similar.

Most everyone knows each other and loves their town

Look up the songs "Hick Town", "Hillbilly Delux", "Country Boy Can Survive", "Famous in a Small Town", "Small Town Southern Man"
"Hollywood South Carolina? Man what a little hick town."

Note from asker:
Peer comment(s):

City of Darkness / Darkville

Stanisław Potocki, the minister of religious denominations and public enlightenment for the Polish Kingdom from 1815 to 1820, was famous (or infamous) for his book Podróż do Ciemnogrodu [Journey to the City of
Darkness
], a biting anticlerical satire that portrayed priests as ignorant and backward. -
