The term can cover a multitude of sins.

PS: In my experience, scenarios like the one described by Michael can be avoided by simply not working with grasping halfwits with little or no knowledge of what translation is about and driven only by the temptation of filthy lucre.

No, thank you! May 2, 2017

I know what post-editing means nowadays: the process whereby humans amend machine translation to achieve an acceptable final product, but I’ll keep away from this type of work until the day machine translation in Portuguese stops to be the idiotic garbage it is still today. If I don’t enjoy reviewing other people’s work, just imagine what I feel about reviewing machine translation…

Wow, I got my post that I submitted about 6 months ago between 2 anonymous posts, I am just sooo happy now.

I asked this poll ages ago because I agreed to do a post editing thinking it was some sort of review job. What I did not realise is that is was the review of an MT that would be subsequently reviewed by some other reviewer. Seems to be the way for some agencies nowadays?

After I noticed what it was I did actually tell them that I would not do the job because it was a real mess and would have took me more time to translate everything from scratch than to correct it all, and that being at dumping prices - no thanks!!

Now I know, but tat the time I just did not realise this....

Good point May 2, 2017

I have had exactly the same reaction concerning the fact that it is better to translate from scratch rather than salvaging a botched job which really is far from flattering and screams for 'that's messed up'

I've been doing it since 1980 May 2, 2017

That's more than 35 years --I'll bet no one else can match that record.

I have given long answers on this subject before, very recently in fact. I wouldn't do it if it didn't pay well. It's not for everyone. It helped that I was an editor for 13 years before I started postediting--I already had a lot of experience fixing up texts.

It's a different mindset... May 2, 2017

I have tried it and said 'never again' - several times!

I have seen quite tolerable passages, which saved a lot of time in a boring text, and this is where MT is winning ground. However, it requires a lot of concentration, and I can't keep it up for very long.

I have also seen utter garbage, and simply told the client to get a decent human translator to do it properly!

I battled for quite a long time with a Dutch-to-English text for a friend who could not afford to pay anyone... but it was an absolute pain. However, I have tried to sort out her translations, and they are not good either - she is an artist, not a translator!

I think post editing is a completely different job from translating, and calls for a different approach.

I agree, it's a different job May 2, 2017

I'm also familiar with digging holes with a spade, and I wouldn't do it for a living, but some people do. Or, as my French great-aunt said: Il faut de tout pour faire un monde.

I did a few PE-jobs when I started out. It's quite a challenging job, usually paid at the level of the translation: peanuts for the monkey. It's been a few years since I stopped wasting my time on something that just might, at least in some fields, attempt to eliminate real translators.

Although it can be quite entertaining to read what a machine has produced, I wouldn't touch (and haven't touched) any PE-jobs because..."I had my nose full from it" = this is the actually machine gen

Such a silly name ... May 2, 2017

What a silly name! All editing is ipso facto "post".
No, I don't take on jobs of this kind.

MT and post-editing....JUST SAY NO! May 2, 2017

If we don't want our professions going the way of the dodo we must ALL absolutely, 110% REFUSE to work on anything MT related...ESPECIALLY that "post-edit" garbage that some companies somehow market to their clients as "professional, reliable quality".

This is going to play out exactly how the drastic drop in rates happened.....WE LET IT HAPPEN. Instead of all of us vehemently opposing ridiculous, laughably impossible deadlines accompanied by outrageously low rates, some of us con

This is going to play out exactly how the drastic drop in rates happened.....WE LET IT HAPPEN. Instead of all of us vehemently opposing ridiculous, laughably impossible deadlines accompanied by outrageously low rates, some of us continued to work under these conditions and now look what's happened. Rates have dropped to an all time low because not all of us had a backbone to stand up and say "NO, we won't work for these rates and under these conditions".

The future of our professions will be determined by how we as a community react to MT and "post-editing" offers. We must all unequivocally OPPOSE any kind of MT work. If we don't stand as a community our professions will absolutely cease to exist one day.

Don't think for ONE SECOND that our jobs would disappear if these cheap skates could convince most translators to take "post-editing" garbage [eh'mm, I mean "jobs"] for peanuts.
