Hello!

I am a relatively new translator, having only finished my master's a year ago. I have read a lot of threads on the forum relating to specialising in a specific area (particularly with common language pairs, like mine) but couldn't find one specifically relating to this topic.

Hello!

I am a relatively new translator, having only finished my master's a year ago. I have read a lot of threads on the forum relating to specialising in a specific area (particularly with common language pairs, like mine) but couldn't find one specifically relating to this topic.

I have been struggling to find work and also deciding which area to focus on as I'm interested in so many things but I recently had a *lightbulb* moment (or maybe more of a ´doh´/ head against the wall moment) when I got frustrated with the amount of teaching jobs I was being offered (unsolicited) compared to the amount of translation work (heavily pursued) I was getting. I realised that perhaps my specialisation is one that I'm already working in, education!

I've been working as a language teacher for nearly 8 years now, in various academies, schools and more recently in bilingual education (primarily Early Years). I am knowledgeable about a lot of theory, terminology and so on, and what's more, it's an area I find really interesting.

So my question is, how can I start out translating texts in this field?
Is it worth contacting universities specialising in these areas? Or is there are more direct way to get involved (associations, publishers etc)?

Also, does anyone have experience in this area? Is there much work to be found?

Many thanks in advance!

Lucy

Hello Lucy,

Yes, there is work in pedagogy and education. You can do volunteer translation (TWB or NGOs are a good option) to gain experience, knowledge and publicity. Show -or build- your expertise online.

Hi Lucy,

as far as I'm concerned I work as both translator and interpreter mainly in the field of early childhood education and pedagogy and since this wasn't my educational background at the University, I studied a lot on my own over the years so as to get acquainted with the terminology, the concepts and the different approaches worldwide. Of course it depends on the language combinations and on the different opportunities you can get access to but it is feasible...

Hi Lucy,

as far as I'm concerned I work as both translator and interpreter mainly in the field of early childhood education and pedagogy and since this wasn't my educational background at the University, I studied a lot on my own over the years so as to get acquainted with the terminology, the concepts and the different approaches worldwide. Of course it depends on the language combinations and on the different opportunities you can get access to but it is feasible !

Feel free to contact me if you wish to have more detailed information or if you have some issues you would like to further investigate.

Thank you both for your advice.
I have been translating for NGOs etc to get more experience over the last few years but wanted to get into something more education focused.

Sandra, thank you too, I will be in touch!
