I started out freelancing as a generalist translator, not at all focused within a specific area of specialization, but eager to learn as much as I could. Apart from tourism, economics and marketing, I acquired my other specializations along the way. This is what builds up to form what is generically called “experience”.

Yes; my field of expertise is architecture (and related fields) and to practise as an architect you legally *must* be a registered member of the relevant professional organisation (in my case two: the Italian one and the UK one).

But ever since I've started freelancing I've wanted to join those 'masonic', 'old boy network' type 'boutique agencies' (said to be located in rural parts of Denmark or France)... I've made countless applications so far, but I've never received a reply. Apparently they don't accept any new members, and they contact you only when one of their members expires. I live in hope.

I have joined the SMS – Societas Medicinae Sinensis (International Society for Chinese Medicine, Germany) in 1998, and I am still a member.
I have translated numerous articles on TCM published in their magazine "Chinesische Medizin", and this helped me to write and publish books on TCM.

We know where you are. When we need you, we will let you know. Don't call us. We will call you.

Had to sit and take the Japan Securities Dealers Association qualification (in Japanese and, for various reasons, with only two days' preparation) in order to be eligible to work. Got it done.

Regards,
Dan

I'm not, so what is TCM? Please don't refer me to Google, this is not about my research skills.
