Hi everybody, I voted "1-2 years"; I bought mainboard, CPU, RAM, HD and most critical components in October 2004, but since then I have been upgrading the system continuously by replacing the video card, adding 512 MB RAM and an additional hard disk, changing my monitor with a 19" flat-screen (the best investment I could do for my eyes) and many other minor modifications. This way I hope that my PC continues serving me faithfully for the coming 2 years, since it bases on a 3.2 Ghz Pentium IV. But I believe that constantly investing in this major "work tool" is unavoidable, also because it represents one of the few tax-deductible expenses we have as translators. Changing this or that, so now there is no detail left from that the first configuration which I bought 10 years ago. Anyway, a computer is like a LEGO game: you can change any part of it. So, I selected `1-2 years' option, too - this is the average term, but during the last year I changed my motherboard and videocard, added more RAM, installed a DVD reader/burner, and so on. Is it still my `old' computer? I'm not sure... | | | More computers / new parts: | Jan 27, 2006 |

My gaming needs force me to regularly update my computer. The only original component in my PC, other than the case, is the CPU. Everything else is new

Marion Schimmelpfennig wrote: I would refer to the newest computer Got me there. I put 3-4 because my main PC is around that age (the motherboard, anyway) but it keeps growing in the way Kirill says. The "spare tyre" - a protable unit - is brand new but will be bound to age faster (rather hard to modify, like portable PCs). | | | Rebecca Barath Verenigde Staten Local time: 22:00 Lid Engels naar Noors + ... I am happy to say mine is brand new! As of Tuesday! I was fighting with a 5++ year old with so many upgrades it wasn't funny! And I finally realized that if I was to be able to continue jamming it full of new stuff I needed to buckle down and call Dell! Getting all the info I needed from my old one was no picnic, since I was advised by my "PC guru" not to load from one unit to the other, quote:" don't bring the old problems to the new one!" Of course, each upgrade feels great; but also, each time I feel there is a smaller difference with the computer I had before. Actually, this last change really was almost unnecessary (I can still use the previous one and the only difference is the connection with the Internet, and I think that is due to a configuration error and is not the old computer's fault) And when I use my son's new laptop (which has all my programs installed), there really is no difference... What I would feel would make a difference would be getting a newer monitor! but that is not a new computer... ▲ Collapse | | | Juan Jacob Mexico Local time: 23:00 Frans naar Spaans + ... I've got 7 computers: 1 from 2000 (almost out of order, of course), 3 from 2003, 3 from 2005. Prices going down and technological improvements make us change them every 2/3 years.
