Well, well, well Feb 23, 2021

I didn’t really have this place down as a go-to source of music tips but some good ones already!

Really love the Dope Lemon track (although maybe less cool without the video?)

Mainly for Dan, here is another Scandi jazzer:

I don’t “do” jazz so I don’t know if she is any good. We studied together at the beginning of her musical journey. She was thin and pretty then, and she did once give me a back massage, but we didn’t really like each other so it would give me a perverse kind of pleasure if she isn’t any good... I’m such a bitch.

A lot of citrus in this thread Feb 23, 2021

Yeah, that was very laid-back, almost horizontal.
Think I preferred the zippiness of the "Lemonade" track suggested by Giovanni though.

While I enjoyed the gorgeous, ah, weather in the video of the song suggested by Renato, summer seems a long way off at this point.

For spring awakening... Feb 23, 2021

This is something I will definitely listen to again soon, with its wide spectrum of emotions:

After all, spring is a good time for good pop music, I guess

Inspiring Feb 23, 2021

Thanks so much for sharing. Interesting stuff. Quite inspiring.
So, it made me move a bit to the more eclectic side of things.
Here are some suggestions.

"Cloudburst Flight" is my favorite Tangerine Dream composition.

And something to completely funk out to:
Herbie Hancock's "Chameleon" from Head Hunters (1973)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UbkqE4fpvdI

And that last piece brought me back to this:
Little Feat's "Red Streamliner" from "Time Loves a Hero" by Bill Payne who also sings it (1977)

Hey Dan. Not that I listen to jazz or funk a lot, but it can draw me in once in a while and this thread definitely made me listen to some stuff again.
Came across this, a reworked funky jazz-rocky version of Stevie Wonder's "Boogie On Reggae Woman" from his album "Fulfillingness' First Finale" (1974)

It's a live version by "Dogs in a Pile" from last year. These young guys are trying hard and quite an arrangement if not improvisational. Thought I put it up here. It's the first song.

Like the jazzy tune. she sings quite well. I liked the bass a lot just rolling through.
That second link - great stuff. These ladies are good. They're making some beautiful noise!

Here' another incredible voice, you're probably familiar with. Annie Haslam (Renaissance) on two of their more poppy songs - but the voice ... nice bass guitar on that first one too.
"Jigsaw" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8wAcPjQMn0Q&list=PLikNHjJ_cxzAOD2K46-qWwR7qHvKWp1z9&index=7
"Camera Camera" - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mr9iIjI7m_s&list=PLikNHjJ_cxzAOD2K46-qWwR7qHvKWp1z9

And I like the following one - it's an all around great piece but again the bass guitar and drum work is fantastic. This song sounds very fresh. All from the same album (Camera Camera 1981)"

Giant Steps Feb 23, 2021

Just been listening to Giant Steps- Coltrane, Old School when he was still doing the Sheets of Sound thing.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xy_fxxj1mMY

These days I tend to listen to other players as a way of loosening up before I play my own music.

Lots of music out there Feb 23, 2021

Oh definitely yeah, I'm not having a dig, Dan. The thought just tickles me: the banker pogoing to the anarchist's anti-establishment polemic.

No offence or umbrage taken, though people are sometimes surprised that many of us have an interest in things other than money, work and booze.

Reminds me of a time I caught a taxi from the airport in Toronto to the financial district. After a calibration discussion about the client's portfolio, and how to handle the meeting, my salesman and I sat back and relaxed.

The driver was listening unobtrusively to a CD with a mix of tracks (so you can tell this was quite a while back, probably 15 years ago). Then a track I knew came on. I spoke up from the back. "Hey driver, you like Salif Keita?" He turned back to look at me in shock, nearly steering us off the expressway. "You know Salif Keita?" he asked incredulously. Turned out he was originally from somewhere in West Africa (don't remember where, but not Mali) and was a big fan of the region's most famous albino.

I only have a couple of his albums, and Moffou is my clear favourite, but I knew the song - Moussoldu - really well. it's my favourite from that album, along with Yamore, performed with Cesaria Evora. The album version of Yamore has a lovely two-minute instrumental introduction, which the official video on YouTube doesn't seem to include. There's a video of Moussoldu on YouTube somewhere with a rough translation, it's a kind of paean to women and their work. He's a real musician.

First and last time I've heard anything in a taxi by any of the world music artists I'm familiar with. Not that I know a large number!

Dan

I heard it for the first time a coupla weeks back when I finally watched "3 Billboards outside...", a decent film BTW. Has been haunting me on and off ever since.

Loud please Feb 24, 2021

One more track from me for tonight, if anyone's interested. You gotta listen loud though. Pretty powerful stuff.

They played here about 10 years ago and this was the one track I especially wanted to experience live. Alas. It had been on the setlist at all previous German venues. Oh well. I bought the t-shirt anyway.

I had never even heard of them. Must explore further.

(though I prefer the album version.)

They've been top of my must-see list for years, since I finally saw Radiohead about 10 years ago (not that they're similar).

Not everyone's cup of tea, I'm sure. It puts me in a trance.
