How easy is it to learn?

Translation Battleship.
Review by
Agenor Hofmann-Delbor . Simply a mature CAT tool that allows users to translate virtually any file format. In addition, the OpenExchange platform provides dozens of useful tools and plugins. No other tool comes close when it comes to connectivity and true interoperability - you can connect to any open translation provider, build your own file filter, verification plugin etc.. What's more - Studio 2014 is part of the complex translation chain of small and large scale solutions, so you can use the same tool at any stage of the project.

Studio 2014 is also intuitive, so if you have 15 minutes you'll learn the basics.

I would suggest getting a free product demo and trying out for yourself!

How easy is it to learn?

Difficult to learn, expensive, useless
Review by
starlinguk . I hate it. I only have it because some of my clients force me to use it. Its user interface is counter-intuitive, the basic freelance version is pretty much useless, it's buggy (it has managed to lose my translation memory more than once and you can't add everything you've translated to a translation memory in one go!). You need to buy extra "apps" to get any kind of useful functionality out of it. Nope. Déja Vu is much, much better. Basically, DV is for translators, Trados is for agencies.

How easy is it to learn?

Excellent tool, although can be a steep learning curve initially
Review by
Claire Cox . An excellent CAT tool, although I found it a very steep learning curve initially and was very grateful for telephone/e-mail support from clients and the free Trados webinars. If you can attend an in-person course, I'm sure that would help enormously too.

Having finally got up to speed, I now wouldn't be without it, especially for translating file formats other than straightforward Word texts - PowerPoint, Excel, xml, idml... Trados is quite long-winded to set up a project initially, BUT you can use any number of translation memories and any number of termbases (glossaries). I love the ability to create AutoSuggest dictionaries once your translation memory has reached a certain size (10,000 translation units, I believe), meaning that phrases you translate regularly will come up as you start typing them. Another aspect of Studio I love is that repeated segments are updated automatically when you’re proof-reading them (as long as you confirm the segment by pressing Crtl+Enter) – brilliant for consistency, especially with a long document. Now that the Java problems have been resolved, adding terms to termbases is pretty simple too.

Studio is also perfect for Trados-requesting clients – as you might expect! I know many translators moan that other programmes are perfectly compatible, but when you’re working for a large corporate client with huge TMs, termbases and Autosuggest files they’d like incorporated in the end result, it’s undoubtedly easier for them (and you) if you’re both using the same programme. And even though you can use xliff files across different CAT tools, the inevitable tag differences mean you rarely get the same matches.

How easy is it to learn?

Studio for professionals!
Review by
AnnaKuzm . I started out using Trados WB, and many years later one of my clients demanded I use Studio. I have to admit that it is not "very easy" to learn, especially if you come from other tools that are file oriented, not project oriented like Studio.

However if you follow the simple, step by step set-up instructions, you will be up and running fairly quickly. As you get more familiar, taking "baby steps" to dig deeper into the different functions and settings is the way to go.

After a few projects using Studio I found that my productivity and quality had increased, and all the OE apps, both free and paid add very useful functionality to the program.

I especially appreciate the extensive list of filters, the different file types (can be customized and added to!), the real-time verification and the fact that you do not have to use the "non-Microsoft" spell checker. I have worked on many files from other CAT tools in Studio and only had one issue that turned out to be a problem with the original file.

The Beta tester forum has been amazing and SDL really listened to comments and suggestions from the users.

It may not always be quick and easy to get support from SDL, but there are forums and blogs that are monitored by several very knowledgeable users, as well as employees at SDL, who are usually quick to help.

The only really negative with Studio is LSP project managers who set up packages for their vendors without understanding translators' workflows. Though there are ways around that!

Comprehensive software solution for freelance translations
Review by
Karen Tkaczyk . I've been using SDL Trados products since the "old" Trados days have used Studio 2014 since it came out. I have the certification - the process of going through the certification materials was effective training for me. I like the interface and its customization options, and use MultiTerm for term management. My favorite feature is the Display Filter in the Review toolbar.
Recent advances in support through social media channels have made that aspect of working with SDL products much less frustrating than in the past.
