Deadline for applications: Friday, November 19, 2004

We believe that good books can travel through the whole world.
We believe that good editors are fundamental in this journey: it’s their knowledge and interest, their love of foreign languages and cultures, their personal taste, which start the slow process of a book’s translation.
We believe that there’s no better way of discovering new authors than through personal, individual contact. That is why we want to invite a small group of editors interested in literature from Latin America to spend a week in Buenos Aires and obtain a first-hand knowledge of the local literary scene.

With the help of: Malba (Museo de Arte Latinoamericano de Buenos Aires), the British Council, the Goethe Institut, Fundación Antorchas and the embassies of Canada, France, Israel and the United States.

Description:
Ten editor’s are invited to spend a week in Buenos Aires, where they will listen to talks about contemporary Argentine literature, meet authors, critics and jounralists, visit publishing houses, bookstores and cultural centres. There will also be special meetings as requested by the editors. The grant includes lodging and food, local transportation and air tickets to Argentina. There will also be a limited number of smaller grants that do not include the air tickets.

Who should apply:
Editors working with translated fiction. We may also consider a limited number of applications by translators and critics. Candidates have to be able to read and understand Spanish in order to profit from the visit, since most venues will be held in that language.

How to apply:
Send a curriculum vitae and a letter explaining why you would like to apply to: [email protected]. Please indicate if you are only applying for the full grant or if you would also accept a partial grant.

Announcement of participants: Monday, December 20, 2004
