Hello everyone! Once I am done translating a book, the employer wishes me to record voice-over for the audio-book.

I turn to all of you for two simple questions:
- what kind of software do I need to do this?
- what are your suggestions on how to rate this, per hour? per page? per word?

Thank you!

voice... Feb 15, 2011

Is your voice nice to be heard?
Have your customer listen to it and aprove before you invest in a soundbooth, microphone, soundboard and software...

Recording payment Feb 15, 2011

Hi Berenice,

I work as a voice over artist and I usually charge per final recorded hour. My suggestion is that you take into account the time you will use in preparation, tests, reviewing and repeating any recorded material, add it up and you will get an idea of how much time will be involved per effective recorded hour.

Hope this helps,

Sayda

Oi Paulo!

The answer is yes. My voice is nice. I have done voice overs for several employers and they actually like it a lot.
The thing is they've all provided me with the software for the job, in trial versions, and editing was done by them.

So I know little about all the infrastructure needed. can you give me more detailed info?
Muito obrigada!

Querida Paisana:

MICROPHONE:
First thing is a good Microphone. If you are going to record to your computer, I would suggest a USB mic.
a) Audiotechnica AT2020 USB is an excelent low cost choice. I have one
http://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-AT2020-USB-Condenser-Microphone/dp/B001AS6OYC/ref=pd_cp_MI_1
b) Shure PG42 USB is a more expensive choice. Have not used that one.
http://www.amazon.com/Shure-PG42-USB-Vocal-Microphone/dp/B001U1IVBI/ref=wl_it_dp_o?ie=UTF8&coliid=IPGS4R9RKJ0Y8&colid=VI2KA5LDA09H

POP-FILTER:
Inexpensive accesory for your Mic, which can make a lot of difference
http://www.amazon.com/Nady-MPF-6-6-Inch-Microphone-Filter/dp/B0002CZW0Y/ref=pd_bxgy_MI_img_b

SOFTWARE:
For ease of use I would suggest
a) Adobe Soundbooth ($200)
http://www.amazon.com/Adobe-65050854-Soundbooth-CS5/dp/B003B32BFK/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1297800227&sr=8-3
b) Adobe Audition ($300)
http://www.amazon.com/Adobe-22011292-Audition-3/dp/B000VU4BZY/ref=pd_cp_sw_2_img
Excelent recording package but not as easy to use
c) Audacity (FREE)
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

SONDBOOTH:
If you have a silent room that's all you might need to start making tests. Depending on the results you might need to add a soundbooth, which can be portable or full.
An example of a portable one is:
http://www.amazon.com/Harlan-Hogan-Signature-Series-Porta-Booth/dp/B00151YP18/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1297800518&sr=8-1-catcorr

BOOKS:
A couple of books which you can get in paper or e-book format:
a) http://www.amazon.com/Voice-Actors-Guide-Recording-Home/dp/159863433X/ref=wl_it_dp_o?ie=UTF8&coliid=IZKBLS8AT2CEE&colid=VI2KA5LDA09H
b) http://www.amazon.com/Voiceovers-CD-Techniques-Tactics-Success/dp/1581154755/ref=pd_sim_b_3
c) http://www.amazon.com/Home-Voice-Studio-Step-Step/dp/0615242170/ref=pd_sim_b_7

I hope this helps, let me know if you need something else.

Alberto

Hi Berenice,

You need a sound editor.

Now I work with Sony Sound Forge. Another option I could recommend is Acoustica with which I worked before. Soon I'm going to switch to Cubase.

Two modes are possible: rating by word and rating by second/minute. Think and chose the one that is more suitable for you. Pages and hours are usually not used as rating units for VO projects.
