| Translation - English Four years after the completion of a 3.6 billion Forint municipal water park in Esztergom, a fourteen million Forint contract for the project remains unpaid. A dispute between the municipality and the original contractor during construction resulted in some doors and windows being left at the construction site. Theses were later used by the city for the project without the supplier ever being paid for them.
As of today the Hungarian construction industry, which employees 300,000 people, has amassed 150 to 200 billion Forints worth of similar debt. Since these businesses have little capital of their own these uncollected debts increase the likelihood of bankruptcy. As long as demand in the construction market remained strong, the prospect of new business could fill in for contracts that were running at a loss. However in the fall of 2006 state funded projects and national income began to contract as a result of Hungary’s convergence program and the industry went into decline. |
