I have also discovered Windows 8 and have already had to go play in the registry to get rid of the useless lock screen... my friends tell me I'll get used to it (the interface)... I'm not quite so sure - already figured out how to put google chrome & skype on the desktop rather than have them run as apps - I wouldn't mind apps so much if I could resize them but you can't use several of them at once. I like to work in Trados on the desktop, research terms in Chrome and chat with friends in Skype all at the same time, I don't want to waste time switching from one app to another...

You don't need to go into the registry. Just don't use the introductory (locked) screen. You still have a desktop, and you can install on it what you want, in the same way as for Win7 and before. I don't use it anymore. If you happen to get an app, just hit Alt +F4, if you don't it stays in the background. The biggest problem is that Win8 has floating elements (for hard workers this is very unstable for the eyes) and is an OS for dummies: all interesting & important features such as the configuration screen have carefully been hidden. But they are still there.

I went from Vista to Win8, and basic hardware and software installation (internet, Office, Acrobat, three CAT Tools with their access keys, Thunderbird and printer driver) took me two weeks.
