I thought "effective cattle population" would do in this case, though I am unsure of what "efetivo" really means in this context! Is it referring to "effective population size" maybe?

: agree with ' bovine stock' as an option, but ' holds' is the wrong word in terms of livestock; if we were talking coal, diamonds or gold stocks, then fair enough.
