Origins of Ancient Accounting
Jericho, a city located to the west of the Jordan River, is estimated to be at least 11,000 years old and is one of the world's oldest continuously inhabited cities. It is believed that the ancient society there used a barter system until about 7,500 B.C., when simple tokens and clay balls (with various shapes) came to represent inventory figures for agricultural goods including wheat, sheep and cattle. The use of tokens eventually expanded, and tokens and envelopes helped to formulate an ancient version of what may have been a balance sheet. These tokens and envelopes helped to identify specific parties with a claim to specific inventory. Tokens also gradually came to represent completed trade transactions.

اَریحا، شهری واقع در کرانه باختری رود اردن حدود ۱۱۰۰۰ سال قدمت دارد و یکی از قدیمی‌ترین شهرهای جهان است که همواره دارای سکنه بوده است. گفته می‌شود که این جامعه باستانی تا ۷۵۰۰ سال قبل از میلاد از روش دادوستد پایاپای استفاده می‌کرده‌اند تا اینکه استفاده از اشیاء شمارشی ساده و توپ‌های رس (با اشکال مختلف) برای نشان دادن مقدار موجودی کالاهای کشاورزی ازجمله گندم، گوسفند و گاو رواج یافت. استفاده از اشیاء شمارشی به‌مرورزمان توسعه یافت؛ اشیاء شمارشی و پاکت‌ها باعث شکل‌گیری نسخه باستانی ترازنامه شدند. این اشیاء شمارشی و پاکت‌ها به شناسایی طرفین معامله با ادعای موجودی خاص کمک می¬کردند. رفته‌رفته اشیاء شمارشی به‌طور کامل تبدیل به ابزاری برای معاملات بازرگانی شد.
