The text is discussing alternative theatre in Poland during the 1980's and the circumstances in which some of the companies gave performances. In particular, one company:
" (...) zaczął grać wyłącznie w drugim obiegu, przede wszystkim w kościołach i salach katechetycznych."
Google results suggest that 'catechism halls' is a "kalka". Is it acceptable to use 'parish halls or 'church halls' (as a working version, I have 'church halls')? Or are they places which must be specifically defined, e.g. 'halls where the catechism was taught'?

church lecture rooms / halls
I would go for this, as these rooms are used not only for catechism teaching. Some other events are held there, like lectures, exhibitions, etc.

I w szczególności teraz tak to wygląda. Obecnie religia uczona jest w szkołach, natomiast katecheza odbywa się w niedzielę w salkach kościelnych (tak przynajmniej ma/miał mój syn - w tym roku poszedł do 1 komunii)
google daje ca. 14 tys. trafień na powyższe

: jednak szkoła niedzielna kojarzy sie z protestantyzmem; w latach 80. religii uczono własnie tam (przez cały tydzień)//ale odbiorca anglojęz. uzna, ze te zespoły grały jedynie przy kościołach protestanckich

Z tego, co wiem, salki katechetyczne były tylko przy kościołach parafialnych - opuszczenie określenia "parish" stworzyłoby niejasność (niezorientowany czytelnik mógłby myśleć, że chodzi o klasę szkolną).
