Discussion

Cecilia Palluzzi (asker) Sep 17, 2013:
Hi, Neil. Thank you and all for your help.
The term is connected to biotechnology of fermentations in food production for human consumption and in the production of balance feeds for pets. It includes soy products, vegetables, fish, and meat. The goals of the tratments are enhancing natural proporties or improving food conservation.
Neil Ashby Sep 17, 2013:
@ Cecilia Can you give us any more context please?
DO you know what some their actual products are (just giving a generic description not the commercial name)?
Do you know how "los alimentos tratados" are treated? Are those foods for human or animal consumption? Cheers ;)
Neil Ashby Sep 17, 2013:
@ Neil I'm with you that searching for "biocultivo" 'yields' almost exclusively information about "agricultura biológica" in Spanish (and Argentinian) sources, i.e. understood to be 'organic' farming. However the context seems to be heavily indicating "biotech" as in GM/bio-engineering. This would suggest that the original's use of '"biocultivos" is not exactly correct or typical.
IMO "fermentación" throws a spanner in the works as well, as it suggests that "biocultivos" could be referring to probiotics and the culture of 'good' bacteria. But on the other hand probiotics are fed to people or animals whereas the text is about soya.....

agree Neil Ashby : I agree, singular/plural is v important here, I nearly dived in with a wrong answer because I didn't notice the plural in the actual context ;)

Thank you, bizisyl!
disagree Neil Ashby : Your ref discusses the 'culture' of mankind, the earth as effected by humans and the environment. It's not really anything to do with cultivation.

biofarming/biodynamic agriculture

maybe an option
Peer comment(s):

neutral Neil Ashby : I think 'biodynamic agriculture' is a specific methodology within 'organic farming'. 'Biofarming' (yes with that spelling!) refers to plant cultivation for end use in pharmaceuticals (PMPs).

organic crop/s

Organic crops are often known in Spanish and French as as "bio". They seem to think this is common parlance in English, which it isn't.

Pax my namesake, the text does seem to be about "biologically engineered crops", but my assertion that cultivos/verduras "bio" refers to what we know as "organic crops/veg" still stands, especially as refers to point-of-sale labelling. Few products will claim to be GM (or otherwise tampered with) except in very small print.
Peer comment(s):

agree Wendy Streitparth : or organic farming?

Yep, "bio" is often used in a similar way to "organic" in English to boost foodstuff sales.
disagree Neil Ashby : // "Mediante esta biotecnología aplicada..." referring to biotech. alim., biocrops & ferm. - in applying these techS you believe the result will be 'organic'? You suggest the company bio-engineers AND does organic farming, counter-intuitive, isn't it?

OK, but you are describing "biotecnología aplicada ". My answer specifically addresses "biocultivos" and I stand by what I've posted so far.
