And I came across this phrase that seems to be used mostly in Argentina(!?) based on my Google searches:

Al leer el original, tiendo a leer "disputa de cartel" (desde España) como "disputa partidista". Sin embargo, a juzgar por los ejemplos argentinos, diría que a lo que se refiere en realidad es a una lucha por el protagonismo ("a fight for the sporlight"). Pero seguro que algún argentino podrá darnos una visión más ajustada de a qué se refiere realmente el original.
