English term

fac'wards

English Art/Literary Music
That word appears in "Airegin" lyric:

Wait'll y'dig it on the map - Airegin Spelled backwards
Really're closin' up the gap - Airegin Gone fac'wards
Back long time ago they saw a ghost
Ghost made a boast
Soon that ghost was host

Discussion

rennesrennes (asker) Sep 19, 2023:
Phil I am interested in your consideration. Indeed, it is possible that the author of the lyric is just trying to rhyme. In particular, jazz has a tradition of scat singing. Thank You !
Clauwolf Sep 18, 2023:
Phil I agree, as Alison excerpt points, its a neologism, a mix of forwards and backwards
philgoddard Sep 18, 2023:
Alison That suggests that it's a nonsense word that's just been put there for the rhyme. I think that's a very likely interpretation.
Alison MacG Sep 18, 2023:

I know all the different versions of the lyrics say "fac'wards', but I wonder if it's a mistranscription. "Toast" would make more sense in the last line of your extract.
Here's the song if you want to listen, though it's hard to make out the words:

If it is indeed "fac'wards", couldn't that be a combination of forwards and backwards?

Back long time ago they saw a ghost
Ghost made a boast
Soon that ghost was host

Those losing their hue
They goofed 'n got the wrong view
First, things reverse, last is first!
Y' dig it!
