Dec 7, 2023 10:32: AllegroTrans changed "Level" from "PRO" to "Non-PRO"

Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

PRO (2): Adrian MM., Toni Castano

Non-PRO (3): philgoddard, Wilsonn Perez Reyes, AllegroTrans

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

Discussion

Angie Garbarino Dec 8, 2023:
His or Her? Context does not tell us who "presenta la nina". Un hombre o una mujer?
AllegroTrans Dec 8, 2023:
Asker What are xxx XXX and XXXX? All different names? Perhaps you could reword this, using fictitious names to help us. It is clearly causing confusion. Thanks!
philgoddard Dec 7, 2023:
Isn't there something wrong with the Spanish?

We don't have the whole context, and it doesn't appear to be a full sentence, but shouldn't it be either 'la niña que presenta QUE nació', or 'el xxx, tiene por nombre XXX, y es su hija y la de...'?

Selected

who is his daughter and that of his spouse

Or switch pronouns, depending on the context: who is her daughter and that of her spouse, __________ (name of the spouse).

Or: who is his daughter and also (that) of his spouse, _______. (sounds a bit more natural)

It would help to have the first part of the sentence to be sure how to word the translation in the best way possible.

... the girl being presented was born ___________ (birthdate), is named ______________, who is his daughter and that of his spouse _____________.
Peer comment(s):

agree philgoddard : Or the daughter of himself and his spouse.

who is his and his spouse's daughter

Example sentence:

Applicant has been the primary caregiver for his and his spouse's daughter and that if he is required to return to Nigeria

Peer comment(s):

agree MPGS : her/his and her/his :-)

Yes, absolutely, MPGS, you are right. Many thanks!

Thank you, Andres!
neutral philgoddard : This doesn't quite work, assuming the Xs at the end are the spouse's name
6 hrs
agree MollyRose : This sounds more natural than the others proposed. The name can be added like this, "and his spouse's (name) daughter." Some translators might think this would be taking too much liberty, though.

who is the daughter of (her-)self and of (her) spouse

It's unclear who the subject of the phrase is: the mother or the father, either being able to register such birth. Cut to MPGS.

...who is his and his spouse's daughter... lends itself to further ambiguity as 1. his may refer to the spouse or the daughter and 2. such spouse, if the father, may have adopted a non-biological child at birth.

Truly a PRO question for lateral thinkers.
