Discussion

Hassan Lotfy Nov 9, 2011:
Mohamed A. Moustafa Nov 9, 2011:
This means that a servant of God may commit sins, yet his servitude to God is measured in light of the three levels of faith: Islam, Eman, Ihsan. Just read this context:

If exclusive connotations of impiety, dissoluteness, or wickedness were intended, then the author would clearly indicate them instead of giving a general expression.
Mohamed A. Moustafa Nov 9, 2011:
@HassanLotfy

The context is quoted from a standard commentary on a text dealing with issues related to Muslim ideology. The author is known for his accuracy and scholarship. So every word he wrote is supposed to reflect the meaning it stands for.

A "servant" of Allah is not necessarily infallible. This is evidenced by the Prophet's Hadeeth:

Hassan Lotfy Nov 9, 2011:
since عباد is normally saved for the good subjects of Allah
Hassan Lotfy Nov 9, 2011:
please note that عباد here is not accurate in the original text, so translating it to servants is misleading, I suggest the use of another term like "the wicked", "the losers", "the sinful" ..etc
Heba Abed Nov 9, 2011:
The verse 99 of Surate Al-Araff is:

فَأَمِنُوا مَكْرَ‌ اللَّـهِ ۚ فَلَا يَأْمَنُ مَكْرَ‌ اللَّـهِ إِلَّا الْقَوْمُ الْخَاسِرُ‌ونَ (٩٩

Your comment means you are smart. The plain Arabic causes confusion.
Paul Raymond Nov 9, 2011:
My bad! Please excuse me.
ISU2010 (asker) Nov 9, 2011:
No mistake. It's about context. Read verse 99 of Surat al-Araaf in Arabic . Thanks

God's plan/scheme against His servants is to confer His favors/blessings upon them so as to gradually seize them with punishment

وقد فسر بعض السلف مكر الله بعباده بأنه استدراجهم بالنعم من حيث لا يعلمون ، فكلما أحدثوا ذنبا أحدث لهم نعمة ؛ وفي الحديث : إذا رأيت الله يعطي العبد من الدنيا ما يحب وهو مقيم على معصيته ؛ فاعلم أنما ذلك منه استدراج .

The word "makr" has been translated as "plan", "scheme", "scheming". Please check the translation of the meanings of the Quran.

Sahih International
Then did they feel secure from the plan of Allah ? But no one feels secure from the plan of Allah except the losing people.
Muhsin Khan
Did they then feel secure against the Plan of Allah. None feels secure from the Plan of Allah except the people who are the losers.
Pickthall
Are they then secure from Allah's scheme? None deemeth himself secure from Allah's scheme save folk that perish.
Yusuf Ali
Did they then feel secure against the plan of Allah?- but no one can feel secure from the Plan of Allah, except those (doomed) to ruin!
Shakir
What! do they then feel secure from Allah's plan? But none feels secure from Allah's plan except the people who shall perish.
Dr. Ghali
So, do they feel secure against the scheming of Allah? Then none feels secure against the scheming of Allah except the people (who) are the losers.

Also, the word istidraaj has been translated as follows:

Muhsin Khan: Those who reject Our Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.), We shall gradually seize them with punishment in ways they perceive not.
Yusuf Ali: Those who reject Our signs, We shall gradually visit with punishment, in ways they perceive not;
Pickthal: And those who deny Our revelations - step by step We lead them on from whence they know not.
Shakir: And (as to) those who reject Our communications, We draw them near (to destruction) by degrees from whence they know not.
Transliteration: Wallatheena kaththaboobi-ayatina sanastadrijuhum min haythula yaAAlamoon
Sahih International: But those who deny Our signs - We will progressively lead them [to destruction] from where they do not know.
Dr. Ghali: And the ones who have cried lies to Our signs, We will soon gradually draw them (to punishment) from where they do not know..

My suggestion:

God's plan/scheme against His servants is to confer His favors/blessings upon them so as to gradually seize them with punishment

Mistake in source text!

This sentence seems wrong - who is the subject of "makar"? Is Allah the object? Istidraaj should be a verb, but it is a noun. Confusing! Please review the source text.

...the plan of God towards men is to lure them [to their destruction] with comforts

It's not a full sentence, as Paul mentioned.

Full sentence is:
وقد فسر بعض السلف مكر الله بعباده بأنه استدراجهم بالنعم من حيث لا يعلمون

Allah's plotting for His servants as using as a decoy graces that He confers upon them from direction they cannot perceive.

I just wish to comment on the use of the term (God). In Islamic contexts, it is preferable and strongly recommended to use the Arab and Islamic terms to substitute English ones. For instance, should replace the the word (God) with (Allah).

Salaam
