Arabic term

الرحلة الدامية

from: http://international.daralhayat.com/internationalarticle/121... about an Egyptian trying to get to Italy illegally in a small boat.

I know literally it is "bloody journey" but from the article I can see no mention of any injuries or deaths so wonder if it can just mean "difficult journey" or "treacherous journey".

Thank you for an help!

Discussion

baligh Mar 27, 2010:
Last week I met this Egyptian guy here in Spain who entered the country in a very similar way.
The original says "تأكيده أنه لو أتيحت له الفرصة مرة أخرى", so obviously the guy is still alive and kicking!
Noha Kamal, PhD. Mar 27, 2010:
Yes, I was inclined to think that he did not because we keeping hearing about similar stories all the time here in Egypt. None of them make it.
Timothy Brooks Mar 27, 2010:
Did he make it? All the answers given make sense, but to pick the best answer we need to know whether or not he succeeded in getting to Italy. If he didn't, then Ms. Kamal is correct with "ill-fated." If he did succeed, then it wasn't doomed; it was merely miserable, and I would agree with Baligh and Ms. Helal.

Bloody Journey (horrible/disgusting)

In here it doesn't have to refer to something full of blood or gore. "Bloody journey" is quite valid.
The term 'bloody' is quite often used in common speech/conversation and usually refers to horrible/disgusting etc

circuitious journey

I think that "bloody" makes little sense here. A calque on a British oath seems far fetched.

Wehr gives the meaning of "move in a circle, turn, spin and revolve, for /DWM/ form II, which seems to fit the context. I can find no support for a adjectival form - checked Dozy and Hinds & Badawi. No trace in Kitab al-Ayn.
Example sentence:

Hans Wehr p. 303 entry / دام دوم
