I think we can not say stairs only because flight=(set of stairs)so if we say (سلالم), the translation will be (ثلاث سلالم)which is not poper Arabic.

This suggestion harks back to the local home construction lingo used in Qatif, Saudi Arabia. An architect would say to a prospective home builder, for instance, that to build a stairway in such a tiny space, you would have to break it into ثلات رميات, and so on. I really have no idea if this expression is used anywhere else.
