Dear All,

What is the right Arabic trnslation for the word "borough" in:

"Staten Island is the fifth borough in New York city"?

I don't think we can say محافظة coz there is another word for that. what do you think?

Maia: I think there is almost no difference between a County and Borough. As this article on Wikipedia suggests:

I think the only difference is that a Borough has to have a governing body, while a county does not necessarily have one.

And TargamaT, I think there is a difference between English boroughs and NYC boroughs, and there is no comparison with those of Paris (i.e. Les arrondissement).

Also مقاطعة is county. so What is the different in Arabic bet. "county" and "borough"? bec. the problem is that we don't have such divisions, I think.

So there is no "one word" translation for borough? bec. Mr. Baligh محافظة is a governorate .... this is so misleading bec one can't fully understand for example why is New York a city while New jersey is a State ... I don't know :(

United state مدينة new york مدينة new jersey ولاية staten island محافظة??
What is that? Also إقليم إداري is not so falmiliar - for sure - it could be the best but why the two words? !

No Maia, حي is not the right translation, because that would be a neighborhood, and in NY you have hundreds of them. While there are only five boroughs in NYC, which are The Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, and Staten Island.

The word borough may have different meaning depending on the country. When it comes to NYC, the city consists of five boroughs: The Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, and Staten Island. And I think مقاطعة is the closest translation.

Borough has many meanings, two of which are as follows:
1. A self-governing incorporated town in some U.S. states=بَلْدَةٌ تَتَمَتَّعُ بِحُكْمٍ ذاتي

2. One of the five administrative units of New York City=الوحدة الادارية or واحدة من خمس وحدات إدارية في مدينة نيويورك

According to the provided context, I think the 2nd one is more suitable.
