English term

dummy

English to Arabic Social Sciences Psychology Newborn children
The little thing you stick into the mouth of a newborn when he/she cries to make them quiet. I know the Sudanese and Egyptians use "as-sakkata" (the quieting thing) but I am curious if there is one that would be understood by women from most MENA countries. This is from a health factsheet on child development

Thanks for your help Thank you all, and especially Fuad for the alternatives. It was interesting to see the word as being used in various countries.
Nesrin Jun 10, 2005:
I would avoid as suggested by Dr. Wathib and Ziad below, as it can also mean "lollipop".
Nesrin Jun 10, 2005:
I think is the word most used in Egypt..

Peer comment(s):

agree Nesrin : اللهاية and المصاصة seem to be the most widely used terms for "dummy" on the net. But مصاصة can also mean "lollipop" so it may be a bit ambiguous.

مَصاصة تسكيت أو تلهية

Here in the US, we call it "pacifier." Back in Qatif, we call it سهاية

سكاته

The term is used almost in MENA countries to mean some mdical plastic tool we put in the mouth of the newborm when he/she cries to make them quiet. By the way Sam, we do not literarly stick it into his/her mouth.
