Note from asker:
Someone who inherits is an heir. I think beneficiary is fine for זוכה.
so how would you translate the entire sentence: שינויים ברשימת הזוכים לפני פטירת המוריש (it is taken from a probate order) Thanks
What I was answering in my previous discussion entry was the second question you asked, namely אז מה יהיה יורש באנגלית. As for the translation you are now asking for, I suggest possibly: Changes in the list of beneficiaries prior to the demise of the testator. (or death of the testator). Harold Lemel is correct in what he has written. He may have another suggestion about this translation. I do not disagree with his answer.
Thank you, Textpertise. That is actually what I wrote, except instead of "the demise" I was less polite and I wrote "the death".
Both actually mean the same thing, but they express different sensitivities. There is no question that the correct translation for מיתה is death. Where the source uses פטירה, possibly something gentler is called for but these are matters of taste and nuance rather than actual substance and if the translation has gone back with "death" rather than "demise", that's perfectly OK from a legal point of view.
I like Texterpise's translation... I would feel very comfortable going with that. Just a couple more notes...to mix things up a bit :)) Changes in the list of beneficiaries before the death of the bequeather (OR testator = someone who leaves a will) Bequeather ---- a person who leaves personal property to someone in their will https://www.macmillandictionary.com/us/dictionary/american/bequeather#bequeather__1 Testator --- a person who dies leaving a will or testament in force https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/testator
Since the asker has indicated that we are talking about probate, I think it is safe to assume that there is a will.
Thank you all. It was an interesting discussion. I will give the grading to Textpertise as he was more or less the first in the discussion. I wish to point out that I used the word Will all through with a capital doubleyou [W]
Sorry, something is wrong with my computer, so I will grade no one.
