Polish term

fabuła staje się pretekstem

Polish to English Art/Literary Cinema, Film, TV, Drama Press release for a play
A press release about a play. In truth, it's not the phrase I have a problem with, but the phrase within the sentence:

"Dopiero na tej bazie zbudowana zostaje akcja sztuki, gdzie do opowiedzenia pewnej historii, takiej, w której XXX does YYY and progresses to ZZZ. "

'. . . where the plot becomes a pretext to tell a particular story...' But the plot IS the story of XXX etc. - not a pretext. Is it tautology. Do I need both 'plot' and story'?

(Or have I quite simply lost the plot completely?!)
Thank you in advance! :-)

your interpretation is correct, but it's not you, only the author who lost the plot;
