This is from the field notes of an Argentine art therapist. She is describing the different members of a group from a mental institution that she took on an outing (the text was written in the 80s):
Juan (ya integrado, quiere ir al culto y conseguir un abogado), Segundo (aportando chamamés cantados y bailados), Amadeo (protestando por haber salido, por haber tenido calor, por haber tenido frío, por la vida, por todo),
Thanks

: A viable answer which would solve the problem of not knowing whether this is referring to church (or synagogue etc.)

: another option might be 'attend religious services' >'to worship' or 'go to service' (as I've suggested), I'd say; 'church' is too narrow for the inclusive language of the source text

I'm thinking it could also have a broader meeting than the options suggested. It fits well with the examples of people with mental health problems below:

go to service
I think it's about coming up with an alternative to 'church' or to 'mass'; thus, this may be best in this context that probably includes protestant denominations.

Due to similarities regarding their (in)frequency of use, 'ir al culto' and 'go to service' would appear to form an equivalent pair in what's likely a fundamentalist Christian context in Latin America.

'church' is too narrow, too restrictive for the inclusive language of the source text >Precisely due to their similar infrequency of use, they appear to be a suitable pair in this context

wants to (go) get religion
Perhaps this "looser" meaning was intended?
Get religion
Traditionally, to get religion is (1) to become religious, or (2) to end one’s immoral behavior. The phrase still carries those definitions, but it’s also used more figuratively to mean (1) to get serious about an issue and devote proper attention to it, and (2) to reform one’s view toward something. The idiom is usually followed by a preposition; about and on work best.
The derivation of the modern definition of get religion is obvious. To get religion in the older sense is to see the light of God, set aside one’s wanton ways, and get serious about living morally. The modern sense of get religion denotes a similar getting-serious process, but without the God part.
The OED lists get religion as an American idiom, but we’ve found several examples from elsewhere in the English-speaking world. The oldest examples of the modern sense of get religion in searchable texts are apparently from the 1960s, though we could be missing some older ones.

: Do you really see something in the text that suggests this? Having spent years in several Latin America countries, I had occasion to hear 'ir a culto' quite a bit. There's no indication it's being used as an idiom here. Regards

go to worship
Has a connotation of the act of worship more than the church building itself
