I work at being an ‘advantaged player’. Sometimes you have to be prepared to lose a client when they decide, simply because of cost, to go elsewhere for their translation or proofreading needs. If they come to realise the benefits you bring to the working relationship in terms of time saved and stress avoided, they tend to return.

I like the "soft bluff" part. We can, for example, write:

I would be happy to accommodate your (low/very low) price offer, however, the service will not include, well... translation services.

Sometimes, being firm really pays off so let's not be intimidated.
