Many people tried to dissuade Walt Disney from making what became his most famous film, ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs’. He ignored them all, members of his family, Hollywood moguls, film critics. But there was one group he could not ignore, the
bankers whose support he needed to finish the film. He put together a rough cut of what he had made so far and nervously awaited their decision. When they emerged from the theatre whistling ‘Hi, ho, hi ho’ he knew that his money worries were, at least temporarily, over. The huge success of the film meant that he was never hard up again.
‘Snow White’, made in 1937, continues to draw audiences in the 21st century and is likely to go on doing so for another 100 years and beyond. It is more important than Mickey Mouse, the character that usually comes to mind when Disney is mentioned. The Mouse has a place in the Disney legend. He was an early creation in the garage-studio where Disney started. He gained fame for Disney throughout the world, as Michel Souris in France, Mikki Maus in Russia, Miki Kuchi in Japan, and so on. During the second world war Mickey Mouse was the password in the American army headquarters of the invasion of Europe.
The Mouse is fun, but ‘Snow White’ is a work of art, as original as a Rembrandt portrait or a Mozart opera. Disney took the Grimm brothers’ fairy tale and kept its Germanic grimness, its depiction of loneliness and the menace of strangers. Some will argue that ‘Pinocchio’, made three years later, is Disney’s finest, but ‘Snow White’ was a first: it showed what could be done with the new medium of animation, a discovery as important as oil painting. The notable Russian director Sergi Eisenstein said it was the world’s greatest film.
His drive
Curiously, not a lot is known about Walter Elias Disney. The simple facts are there, of course, his birth in Chicago, one of five children, the list of his films. But the interesting bit of his life, what drove him on, remains elusive.
It can be useful when trying to find the truth about a person who is long deceased to compare the official and unofficial accounts of his life. The official biography says that Disney’s father “could be quite stern”, a strong phrase in an otherwise glossy piece of writing. But it is clear from friends who shared Disney’s confidences that his father was not just stern; he was a tyrant. It is no wonder that young Disney volunteered for the army during the first world war. Better the trenches than his father’s rod. At 16 he was too young to fight but he talked his way to France, where he drove ambulances.
Some commentators have argued that his unhappy childhood was responsible for a side of Disney that was suppressed by his studio publicists who portrayed him as an outgoing, optimistic chap who (of course) whistled while he worked. But his films, ostensibly designed for the children’s market, contain disturbing passages foreshadowed in ‘Snow White’. ‘Pinocchio’ is about deceit. ‘Bambi’ has a nightmarish scene where the fawn’s mother is killed. ‘Dumbo’ mocks the handicapped. But whether Disney included such material because his father beat him is irrelevant. He was an artist. At one level the films provide clean, decent entertainment that parents would approve of, but Disney could not conceive a work of art that did not show the shadows as well as the light. Painters call it chiaroscuro, the management of light and shade. There are few shadows in the films made by the Disney organisation after the master’s death.
Animation enabled Disney to create his own stars, bringing them to life from drawings. The director Alfred Hitchcock, recalling his own difficulties with casting, remarked, “If Disney didn’t like an actor, he would just tear him up.” It was more likely for a character to be developed by Disney and his team, which he ruled uncompromisingly. Nearly all his artists were refugees from a troubled Europe, and matched Disney’s ambiguous view of human nature. The Queen in ‘Snow White’ is European in concept, and there cannot have been any actress in Hollywood at that time who could have conveyed the idea of pure evil so convincingly.
Disney created an entertainment empire that at the time of his death in 1966 was bringing in $100 million a year, a huge sum at the time, and now has sales of around $22 billion a year. But he seems to have had little interest in personal wealth. He drew a relatively modest salary and left the bookkeeping to an elder brother, Roy Disney. His ‘Snow White’ experience taught him that banks love to lend money if they believe it will make more money. “It’s not what you have,” he said, “but how much you can borrow that’s important in business.”
Every time he wanted “a buck to be spent creating” the banks gave him the keys to their safes. And not just for films, but for enterprises such as the amusement park Disneyland in 1955, a model of urban planning, and the vaster Disney World, started in 1965 and opened after his death. Speculative though they were, it was enough for the moneymen that they had the Disney brand. In 1959 Nikita Khrushchev, the Soviet leader, on a visit to America, was as disappointed as a child when he was told he could not visit Disneyland for security reasons.
How do you measure success? There is the money, of course. There are the honours, some 700, ranging from honorary degrees at Harvard and Yale to his appointment as Officier d’Academie, France’s highest artistic award. There are the opinions of his peers: he won 29 Oscars. But a legend is something more. To Americans, Disney is what the ancient Greeks called an immortal, an accolade they granted to someone who had accomplished great things that would long be remembered. Disney will be remembered every time his tunes are whistled and his scenes recalled.

Source text - English Can your business be franchised?
At its most simplistic, franchising appears to be an easy and quick way to make money. Nothing could be further from the truth. Building a successful franchise operation is a marathon run, not a sprint.
Franchising is an extremely effective method of marketing goods or services. It offers several unique advantages to both the franchising company ( franchisor ) and the person or company buying the franchise ( franchisee ).In business-format franchising, the franchisee is supplied with the complete formula to set up and operate its own branch of the business, be it a retail shop, a service center or van. This system can be extraordinarily powerful. It can turn one person´s idea into not just a nationally known company, but a giant multinational corporation. This can all be achieved within a relatively short time and at substantially less cost than by more traditional routes of business development. McDonald´s, Holiday Inn and Budget Rent-a-Car are all examples of companies whose growth and continuing success are due to franchising.
However, a franchise must be built on a sound business base and the pieces painstakingly put into place, otherwise the results can be disastrous – not just for the franchisees who have invested monry in the business, but also for the franchisor. The responsibility and cost to the franchisor of meeting its obligations to its franchisees are considerable, and an ill-conceived or prematurely launched scheme can very easily bring about the failure of the entire business.
Now semi-retired, David Taube is the founder and Senior Partner of Woldingham, Surrey, UK-based CMF Consulting, which specializes in Strategic Planning. Prior to forming CFM, he was Head of Publicity for numerous divisions of Honeywell and a Director of the UK arm of public relations counsellors Ruder & Finn, where he advised Philip Morris and 3M Corporation. From 1980 – 1995 he was Group Managing Director of Dyno-Rod Ltd., one of the first large non-food franchise operations in the UK. He talks here with James Nelson about franchising and its pros and cons as a business expansion model.
Would you explain the essence of franchising as a business model?
A business-format franchise is a contractural license granted by one person ( the franchisor ) to another ( the franchisee ) which during the period of the franchise requires the franchisee to carry on a particular business under a business-format or according to a system established by the franchisor. This permits the franchisee to use in connection with the business the franchisor´s trade name, trade mark, service mark, goodwill and knowhow. This also requires the franchisee to make a significant investment of its own resources in the establishment of the business and to pay the franchisor fees in consideration for the franchise and goods and services provided to the franchisee. It also entitles the franchisor to exercise continuing control over the manner in which the franchisee carries on the business.
On the other hand, the franchisor is obliged to provide the franchisee with training in the operation of the franchisor´s format and system, continuing support in carrying on the business, including training of staff, advertising, and the management and organization of the franchisee´s business. Of course, franchise systems can differ from one another because they are formulated to reflect the ideas of different franchisors and the opportunities in their particular markets.
What advantages does franchising offer over more traditional operating methods?
The main advantages to the franchisor is that less capital is needed to establish the network since the franchisee provides the capital to open its own branch. So the business can grow more repidly because its growth is not tied to the rate at which the franchisor can raise capital for expansion. As less capital is needed to develop by franchising than by more traditional methods, the franchisor does not have to surrender a large chunk of equity, nor borrow heavily to finance its expansion and consequently have to carry a dangerously heavy burden of debt.
For the franchisor there are fewer headaches becaue the franchisee is responsible for recruiting and managing its own staff and the day-to-day problems of running an outlet. Fewer managers are generally needed to control and supervise the network because the franchisee is motivated - - having invested their own money in the business. Also, security problems should be deminished because the franchisee owns the business and is physically on the premises.
The performance of a franchised outlet is often better than a conventional branch because of the commitment and motivation of the franchise owner. This is apparent in such vital areas as customer service, selling, marketing and housekeeping. The franchisee´s knowledge of the area and local business contacts can often lead to higher sales.

En forma simplista, las franquicias parecen ser una forma fácil y rápida de hacer dinero. Nada más alejado de la verdad. Desarrollar una operación exitosa de franquicias es como correr una maratón, no una carrera de velocidad.
El franchising es un método extremadamente eficaz de comercialización de productos o servicios. Ofrece varias ventajas singulares tanto para la empresa franquiciante (el franquiciador) como para la persona o empresa que compra la franquicia (el franquiciado). En este formato de negocios, se le suministra al franquiciado la fórmula completa para establecer y operar su propia sucursal de la empresa, sean tiendas, un centro de servicio o una furgoneta. Este sistema puede ser extraordinariamente poderoso. Puede convertir la idea de una persona en no sólo una empresa conocida nacionalmente, sino en una gigantesca corporación multinacional. Esto se puede conseguir en un período relativamente corto de tiempo y con considerablemente menos costo que mediante la mayoría de las rutas tradicionales de desarrollo comercial. ¿Podría explicarnos la esencia de las franquicias como modelo de negocios?

¿Qué ventajas ofrecen las franquicias sobre otros modelos de negocio más tradicionales?
La principal ventaja para el franquiciador es que necesita menos capital para establecer la red dado que el franquiciado aporta el capital para abrir su propia filial. Entonces el negocio puede crecer rápidamente porque el crecimiento no está atado a la velocidad con que el franquiciador puede obtener capital para la expansión. Como se necesita menos capital para desarrollar una franquicia que los requeridos por métodos más tradicionales, el franquiciador no necesita entregar una gran parte de su patrimonio, ni endeudarse fuertemente para financiar su expansión y cargar con una pesada deuda.
El franquiciador tiene menos dolores de cabeza ya que el franquiciado es responsable de contratar y gerenciar su propio personal y de los problemas diarios de la operación del negocio. En general se necesitan menos gerentes para controlar y supervisar la red porque el franquiciado está motivado al haber invertido su propio dinero en el negocio. I was born in Argentina but I lived for 7 years in the USA and for 2 years in Brazil while attending to graduate school and working as an instructor of Spanish. In 2004, I started working as a translator in English, Spanish and Portuguese for the department of Romance Studies at Cornell University (USA) and have been doing translations from ever since.
Before moving to the USA, I have previously worked in Argentina in the areas of graphic design, business, marketing, and journalism. As part of my work I translated, from English and Portuguese to Spanish, business presentations, personal letters, survey questionnaires, interviews, and articles on a wide range of topics (tourism, marketing, techonology) for websites such as DigitalDreams, MujeresDeEmpresa, and KnowledgeCurve.
In addition to my experience in marketing and business, which gave me a deep knowledge of the professional jargon, I have a solid academic background in the field of Humanities. I hold a BA in History (University of Buenos Aires), an MA in Latin American Literature (Cornell University), a Portuguese Language Certificate (Pontificia Universidade Catolica do Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), and a PhD in Romance Studies (Cornell University, USA). I have also published academic articles in English, Spanish, and Portuguese in various journals in Spain, Latin America and the USA and magazine articles in youth-oriented publications such as Zona de obras (Spain).
As my resume shows, in the last ten years I have also had the opportunity to design and teach a variety of courses in history, Spanish language and Contemporary Latin American literature and Cinema for students at all levels, both at the University of Buenos Aires, and at Cornell University. I have also carried out some translations of extremely specialist documents including academic articles on literature, history and film studies.
