Testo originale - Inglese In Process A, the hemiacetal II is directly methylated at the C2’-position with methyl iodide in an inert solvent such as tetrahydrofuran, 1,2-dimethoxyethane, in the presence of a strong base to give the hemiacetal V. Example of such bases include: lithium diisopropylamide, lithium hexamethyldisilylamide, lithium pyrrolidine, sodium hexamethyldisilylamide, and potassium diisopropylamide. The most preferred condition tor this transformation requires the mixing of n-butyl lithium and pyrrolidine at about –25 ºC in an inert solvent such as tetrahydrofuran to generate the lithium amide which is then further cooled to a lower temperature, preferably –35 ºC, and added slowly to a solution of hemiacetal II in an inert solvent such as tetrahydrofuran at the same temperature so as to maintain to internal temperature at -30 to –35 ºC. This is followed by the addition of methyl iodide. The alkylation product can be isolated by conventional methods.

Testo originale - Inglese The Aznalcóllar tailings facility was planned in 1978 and its operation began in 1979. It is roughly rectangular in shape, approximately 2,000 m long in a N-S direction by 1,000 m E-W, with a 200 Ha surface area and a final capacity of 32.6 Hm3. It is divided by a spur dike running E-W between two dams, the pyrite one to the south and the pyroclast one to the north. The deposit is closed to the west by a natural slope, and on the north, south and east sides by an embankment with a maximum height at present of 27 m.
The deposit was built is stages over the last 20 years (Fig 5-1) according to the operating needs of the mine, and filling took place in parallel to re-building up. As a result of the re-building up and filling, interstitial pressures induced in the marls were produced.
In 1996, as part of the Los Frailes Project feasibility study, a reworked project was carried out which confirmed the feasibility of storing the additional tailings generated by the Los Frailes Project, by increasing the storage capacity to 32.6 Mm3, via raising the level of the pyrite embankment crest from the 70.65 m above sea level considered in the 1987 project to 72.04 m asl.
The Aznalcóllar facility was constructed on bench gravel 3-5 m thick, supported on top of 70 m of blue marl sediments.
