L’exploitation de la mine se fait selon une méthode couramment utilisée dans les
mines à ciel ouvert, dite en banquettes et gradins (Figure 5). Ceux-ci sont creusés à la main (barre à mine et pelle) dans un grès moyennement consolidé, relativement mal trié, grossier à très grossier à galets décimétriques. Ce type de sédiment correspond vraisemblablement à des barres gréseuses fluviatiles à laminations entrecroisées de système progradants. La présence de galets décimétriques montre que le régime hydrodynamique devait être important. De plus, ce grès comporte une fraction non négligeable d’argile qui contribue à la
cohésion de la matière. (Attention une étude géochimique devrait déterminer s’il ne s’agit pas d’argile gonflante responsable de mouvement de contraction et rétractation du sol).

The mine is run according to a method commonly used in “open” mining
– that is, using pans and ledges (Figure 5). These are dug by hand (using
crowbar and shovel) in moderately solid sandstone, relatively poorly sorted,
ranging from coarse to very coarse, to pebbles a few centimetres in diameter.
This type of sediment most likely corresponds to progradant fluvial sandstone
bars, intersected by laminar stratification. The presence of decimetric gravel a
few centimetres in diameter shows that hydrodynamic conditions must have
played a significant role. Moreover, this sandstone contains a considerable
quantity of clay, which contributes to the material’s cohesive properties. (N.B.
a geochemical survey should determine whether or not expanding clay is
responsible for movement, contraction and retraction of the soil.)

Source text - French Grippe A : des experts de l'OMS avaient des liens avec des fabricants de vaccins
Cette fois, c'est officiel : la pandémie 2009-2010 due au nouveau virus grippal A (H1N1) est terminée. La directrice générale de l'Organisation mondiale de la santé (OMS), le docteur Margaret Chan, l'a annoncé mardi 10 août, suivant l'avis du Comité d'urgence réuni le matin même à Genève. L'OMS a aussi mis en ligne, mercredi 11 août, la liste des 16 membres de ce comité et la déclaration d'intérêts faite par six d'entre eux.
Jusqu'ici, seul le nom du président de ce Comité d'urgence, l'Australien John McKenzie, avait été rendu public. Ce qui alimentait les critiques sur le manque de transparence de l'OMS. Aucun expert français ne figure sur la liste.
Parmi les six membres ayant effectué une déclaration d'intérêt, certains dirigent des centres de recherche ayant reçu des fonds de l'industrie pharmaceutique. L'OMS a cependant estimé qu'il n'y avait pas de conflit d'intérêts tels que les six experts auraient dû s'abstenir de participer aux travaux du Comité.
Le dossier du professeur Arnold Monto (Université du Michigan), déjà épinglé en juin par le British Medical Journal, apparaît pourtant copieux. Il a déclaré des activités de consultant, passées et présentes, pour un montant n'excédant pas à chaque fois 10 000 dollars (7 660 euros), auprès des laboratoires GSK, Novartis, Roche, Baxter et Sanofi. Soit les quatre principaux fabricants de vaccins, mais aussi les deux producteurs d'antiviraux (Roche et GSK).
Concernant la gestion de la pandémie, le docteur Chan estime que "nous avons eu beaucoup de chance ". La directrice générale a invité les Etats à maintenir leur vigilance. "Le nouveau virus H1N1 a pratiquement cessé de sévir, a-t-elle indiqué. Cela ne signifie pas qu'il a complètement disparu." Il devrait adopter "le comportement d'un virus grippal saisonnier et [continuer] de circuler quelques années encore".
Translation - English Swine Flu: WHO experts had links with vaccine manufacturers
This time, it’s official: the 2009-2010 H1N1 flu pandemic is over. The news was announced on Tuesday 10th August by Dr. Margaret Chan, Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), following the advice of the Emergency Committee, who had held a meeting that morning in Geneva. On Wednesday 11th August, the WHO also published a list of the 16 committee members, and the declaration of interests made by six of them.
Until now, only the identity of the Committee Chair – Australian John McKenzie – had been made public, fuelling criticism of the WHO’s lack of transparency. No French experts feature on the list.
Of the six members to declare an interest, several are in charge of research centres receiving funds from the pharmaceutical industry. However, the WHO judged that there was no conflict of interests that would require the six experts to abstain from involvement in the Committee’s work.
Still, Dr. Arnold Monto (University of Michigan) does appear to hold an impressive track record. He has declared consultancy fees, past and present, of up to $10,000 at a time from GSK, Novartis, Roche, Baxter and Sanofi. In other words, the four major vaccine manufacturers, as well as the two producers of antiviral drugs (Roche and GSK). In terms of handling the pandemic, Dr. Chan believes “we have been aided by pure good luck”. The Director-General recommended that countries remain vigilant. “The new H1N1 virus has largely run its course,” she stated, “[but] this does not mean that [the virus] has gone away.” The virus is expected “to take on the behaviour of a seasonal influenza virus and continue to circulate for some years to come.”
