Since 8th grade, I have always wanted to a translator. The profession has been kind to me.

Late in life, but never with the intention of switching careers, I became a certified landscape designer. I do designs on the side. I have also written a couple of books (another one currently in progress). But translation continues to be my profession and my primary interest.

No, never Jan 1, 2022

I entered the translation world rather late in life (in my late 30s) and after 40 years I’ve never regretted my choice, quite the contrary!

Happy New Year to you all!

Sometimes, not often but I do get discouraged with the prevalent low rates, fuzzy matches etc. It sometimes seems agencies are taking advantage of Covid to offer or accept only low rates or fuzzy matches. But then, along comes a text I enjoy translating and which I translate well, and that makes up for the other disadvantages I mentioned.

I am unemployable! Jan 1, 2022

After a long and checkered career - I wanted to read medicine, but have finally admitted that it was probably a good thing I did not get into medical school. I trained as what I like to call a technical librarian, and might have done quite well in the days before the Internet, as one of the gremlins in the stacks of big academic libraries, cataloguing and storing acquisitions or finding books and documents for users who cannot go down there themselves, sending them by post if necessary, and what... After a long and checkered career - I wanted to read medicine, but have finally admitted that it was probably a good thing I did not get into medical school. I trained as what I like to call a technical librarian, and might have done quite well in the days before the Internet, as one of the gremlins in the stacks of big academic libraries, cataloguing and storing acquisitions or finding books and documents for users who cannot go down there themselves, sending them by post if necessary, and whatever such people do.

I met a Dane... and we could not live without each other! So I ended up in Denmark, where there seemed to be unemployed librarians everywhere, and it is a terrible language until you get to know it.

I tried a series of jobs - child minding, factory work, the home-care services, a local museum, and even a stint at the local library, by which time I had learnt quite a lot of Danish and polished up my French and German a little at night school. I did not fit in any of those jobs, but they were useful experience. I kept looking for something more permanent, and finally, in my late 40s, I landed an in-house job with a translation agency.

Suddenly I had landed on the right shelf, as the Danes say. I would not want to stay in house indefinitely, but it made an enormous difference. So here I am, past pension age, but still freelancing, with no plans to stop.

I would not want to start out now, but that is another matter.

Happy New Year everyone!

"Do you sometimes lose confidence in your career choice?"

No- I became a translator because I lost confidence in my *previous* career choice, which was very stressful and demanding, fraught with politics, exploitation, desperate networking, a need to insinuate oneself into certain elite milieux, polluted with people who had no talent but excellent connections (and inherited wealth that made it all easier for them)....I could go on....

Never! Jan 6, 2022

If I lost confidence in my skills and in my career choice, I wouldn't be working as a translator!
On the contrary, maintaining confidence and being persistent are the key to succeeding in your career.
