This is from the same Lebanese short story as in my other question. The sentence is:
The first part is clear. The writer feels that his girlfriend would soon feel that she had made a mistake, but the rest afterwards doesn't seem to make sense. The second part of the conditional sentence seems to be missing. Does he mean that not only the girl would suffer but also her friends, neighbors etc.

volunteer to express their concerns about your case

volunteered their expressions of sympathy for you
Two interpretations:
Either he wants to say that everyone volunteers their sympathy towards her ( including her mother, father and brothers)
OR: They express their sympathy towards her ِAND her mother, father and brothers.
The way the sentence is written, I believe it is the first option. Because if I were to express the second interpretation, I would have re-written to avoid ambiguity:
You have to take your clues from the rest of the passage.

I think the first part of the sentence satisfies the condition, i.e. "Unless they volunteer their sympathy, you'd soon feel that you've made a grave mistake".
