In ESR, the microwave radiation is kept constant, and the magnetic field varied. At the point at which energy supplied by the microwave radiation matches the energy required to cause the electrons to move from a low (parallel with magnetic field) to a high energy state (anti-parallel to magnetic field), the energy is absorbed. This is the point of resonance.
