Thanks Henrique - I know cms are all over the place, but column inches is such a set expression in English - that PR firm cited in the link wouldn't get so far if it called itself column centimetres -and in the US they still measure weight in lbs.,etc!

advertising space in columns per centimeter
In the US and the UK [I think], advertising space is sold in columns per inch...Obviously, here it's columns per centimeter. Perhaps there is some other norm, like Picas, that could be used...
here are examples in English: You can't just say inches when the Portuguese says Centimeters..it don't work like that [I am using Don't on purpose]

However, specialized units like this are sometimes selected in order
to make quantities easy to visualize. For example, newspapers and
magazines sell advertising space not in terms of 'square inches', but
in terms of 'column-inches',[In Your case, Column-centimeters] which measure the area of a column -
however wide that turns out to be for a given publication - one inch
long.

: well, yes, column centimetres as it's for Portugal - in Eng. you'd say you're aiming to get the clients more column inches, etc./I suppose it depends on how it's going to be used and to whom addressed but I see your point

no Rachel..the publication is in a metric system country. it is the actual plan. You can't just switch measuring systems like that. It is a major translation error. really.

Discussion
I understand what you say about inches/centimeters, and under another circumstances, I would have followed your suggestions.
But may be if I give you more info you'll understand what I mean.
This communication strategies have been designed for a Buddhist Temple in Sao Paulo (marketing has no limits! ;-) )
They have received attacks by sectors in the media that are completely ignorant about their teachings and philosophy, so they are trying to improve their image in the community mostly a huge marketing campaign to make people know what Buddhism is really about and encouraging their participation.
So as some "executives" of this Temple apparently live abroad, their Brazilian peers want to tell them what it's all about. In the end, what's important here is that they just need to know that there will be quarterly reports about the temple's presence in the media, in a format (column inches) they would easily understand.

Considering the text I am translating, the answer that fits best here is "column inches". Although it has been designed by a Brazilian company, this presentation is not intended to sell advertising space but to inform foreign branches about the necessary steps to be taken to improve the company's image before the media.
