Portuguese term

queijada

Portuguese to English Other Cooking / Culinary
This is the name that we give to small pastry cakes filled with cheese or a sweet filling such as orange, eggs, or some other sweet pudding type of filling. Essentially they look like miniature pies. I'm wondering if there's a better UK english term than miniature pie.

Thank you. Thank you all for your help. It was enlightening and helpful.
Alexandra Gouveia Oct 21, 2008:
Hello, Susana, the only thing that I can tell you for sure, is that here, in the UK, "pasteís de nata" and even the "pasteís de Belém" are referred to as "custard tarts". And, yes, I do know they do not contain cheese. :-)
Susana Alves (asker) Oct 21, 2008:
Link to a picture and ingredients of this queijada Hello and thank you all for your suggestions, I've found a link that I should have included when I posted, it has a picture of the "pie" and the ingredients. http://www.queijadasdagraciosa.pt/home.html Besides in the name, cheese doesn't enter into this recipe.
Thais Maria Lips Oct 21, 2008:
Answering your clarification Mince pies normally have a pastry top, but versions may also be found without the top in which case they are known as a mince tart or a niamh
Susana Alves (asker) Oct 21, 2008:
Clarification I should clarify that it is more of a tart because it has no pastry top.

tartlet

If they’re savory (salgado,) I would say tartlet, or cheese tartlet to be more specific.

Mince pies, on the other hand, are sweet, and don’t contain cheese. As the Wikipedia entry says, they are made with fresh and dried fruit, spices, nuts, etc. So if the queijada is sweet, you could say mince pie, as long as it contained the ingredients of mince pie.

agree Claudio Mazotti : I would use "sweet cheese tartlet" or "Portuguese sweet cheese tartlet"

The American cheesecake is not really a cake, it is more like a tart.
agree Abigail Elvins : The filling at least is certainly very similar to a baked cheesecake
