party acronym
sigla identificadora do partido politico - It looks to me like a party acronym. In Brazil, most patries are known by their acronyms, eg PT, PCB, PFL, PMDB etc.

abbreviated party name
Ex.: sonar [<so(und) na(vigation) r(anging)]." "Dicionário Aurélio Eletrônico"

(recognized) political parties
Votes are given to political parties, not to abbreviations.
Proportional representation (PR) is a concept in voting systems used to elect an assembly or council. PR means that the number of seats won by a party or group of candidates is proportionate to the number of votes received. For example, under a PR voting system if 30% of voters support a particular party then roughly 30% of seats will be won by that party.
http://www.en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proportional_representation
The Green, Libertarian, and Reform parties have fulfilled all the requirements in R.S. 18:441 and are now recognized political parties.

: I do have to agree with your very logical argument. No-one votes for abbreviations. If only source texts were always locical and well-written our jobs would be so much easier

Thanks, Ana, including for the excellent reference. In Brazil, /legenda/ is often a synonym for /partido/.
