Portuguese term

acolhimento

Portuguese to English Other Government / Politics Agricultural policy
My understanding is that these services take in people in need. Is this correct? If so, I'm looking for a bureaucratic word for this kind of service (not a literal translation).

"Coordenado pela Secretaria de Políticas para as Mulheres da Presidência da República, o Programa “Mulher, Viver Sem Violência” propõe estratégias para melhoria e rapidez no atendimento às vítimas da violência de gênero, por meio da integração de serviços públicos de segurança, justiça, saúde, assistência social, **acolhimento**, abrigamento e orientação para o trabalho, emprego e renda."

Muriel Vasconcellos (asker) Mar 31, 2014:
Thanks everyone! It was hard to choose between 'outreach' and 'intake'; I think both are good options.
Muriel Vasconcellos (asker) Mar 30, 2014:
@Donna I delivered the job using 'outreach', but I agree that 'intake' is better. If you post it, I can select your answer.
Nick Taylor Mar 30, 2014:
Isn't acolhimento... ...fostering?
Donna Sandin Mar 30, 2014:
acolhimento I think "intake" is the best, at first I thought "outreach" would be right but "intake" (variation of take-in) fits in well with the sequence of services listed - abrigamento being shelter...
Mario Freitas Mar 26, 2014:
Acolhimento, the way I see it is the very first moment or contact, when the needy person is taken into some institution. It's a process of induction (sort of), when the institution prepares the person to the kind of hosting and treatment he/she is about to receive. I don't think induction would be appropriate here, so I called it "take-in service". It's not housing, lodging or sheltering; these terms are covered by the next term of the original text, "abrigamento". "Outreach", on the other hand, encompasses a lot more than only "acolhimento". It would be, perhaps, an excellent choice for the entire scope of services of the relevant institution.
Teresa Freixinho Mar 26, 2014:
Creio que outreach é a melhor opção nesse caso, pois o abrigo é apenas uma das facetas do programa, que provavelmente inclui aconselhamento, orientação jurídica e etc.
Nick Taylor Mar 26, 2014:
acolhimento... = taking into care
Support services? ...

outreach

outreach (to avoid - collection, welfare, etc) and it is sufficiently vague and open to interpretation
Note from asker:
Thanks, Nick. I like it, even if it isn't very precise.

agree Judith Armele : I think this is the one that suits better.

shelter service

I understand the same as you, and think it is called shelter service.
Note from asker:
That's exactly the translation I used for "abrigamento".
Peer comment(s):

neutral Janaina Ribeiro : Wouldn't that be "abrigamento"?

Could be. It is being difficult for me to see the difference between them. http://www.dicio.com.br/acolhimento/

lodging

:) I think this is the best word for that
Peer comment(s):

agree Teresa Freixinho : Pelo contexto apresentado, "lodging" é apenas umas das propostas do tal atendimento, que inclui outros serviços.

refuges or safe housing

Both terms can be used and if the text is quite long and the term repeated, maybe an alternation would make the English more reader-friendly...
"A refuge is a safe house for women and children escaping domestic violence"

Well, nobody agreed with Take-in, so it may be a choice.

I think intake would be a good choice, as it would express what is actually the "acolhimento". Please see discussion entry I just posted. Thank you!

Of course, Muriel. It has to fit into the context. That's the mst important aspect of the term, no doubt.
Note from asker:
Thanks, Mario. Your answer got me thinking about "intake" also.
The problem is that 'take-in service service' doesn't work with the rest of the string. But 'intake' is good and I probably should have used it.
