To be or not to be; that's the question: how to differentiate "estar" from "ser" in English?

"A manhã raia. Não: a manhã não raia.
A manhã é uma coisa abstracta, está, não é uma coisa.
Começamos a ver o sol, a esta hora, aqui.
Se o sol matutino dando nas árvores é belo,
É tão belo se chamarmos à manhã «Começarmos a ver o sol»
Como o é se lhe chamarmos a manhã,
Por isso se não há vantagem em por nomes errados às coisas,
Devemos nunca lhes pôr nomes alguns." - Alberto Caeiro / Fernando Pessoa

Discussion

Oliver Simões (asker) Dec 21, 2018:
To all, I know the semantic difference between the two. I'm not looking for an explanation but for a translation that fits smoothly in the poem. Preferably something short. Sorry if my question wasn't clear.

it's a notion, not a thing

Or,

Morning is an abstract thing. It just is. It's not an actual thing.

It's all quite subjective, really.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thank you, Marian. I believe your translation fits in nicely. Although "notion" is not an exact match at the semantic level, it's synonymous to opinion (which is something abstract and temporary) in contrast with "a thing", something more permanent. I think this will do for now. Thank you all."

to be temporarily / to be permanently

Vai aumentar o texto, mas pode ser uma solução
Note from asker:
Obrigado, Mario. Eu entendo a diferença, mas estou precisando de uma tradução que se encaixe no poema, sem aumentar o texto. Acho que o jeito vai ser usar "to be" mesmo.

agree Frank Miller : Ou talvez "it's transient."

A permanent trait vs a transient condition

Outra sugestão.

a being

"a being, not a thing" might work. Or perhaps something like "it is being, it is not a thing".
"It is fluid, not fixed" would express the same idea but perhaps strays too far from the original wording?

...is something abstract, that is (to say), not something tangible.

An idea. I think this term needs to be translated in accordance with how you translate the rest of the sentence as a literal translation probably would not work in English.

or even:

"...something abstract, in existence, though not something tangible."

it’s a passing, not a permanent, thing

it’s a passing, not enduring, thing.

@asker I did wonder whether you want to keep “thing” though I presume from your comments in other posts that you probably do. If not, another thought was:

“is an abstraction, (it is) passing, not here to stay”.

But it might be a step too far from the original?
