I agree with Scott, it sounds wrong to my British ears too. Perhaps Marlene's version could be adapted to "in scenery typical of the southern zone of Rio", which would work for all kinds of English.

Perhaps it is countable in US English as Wiki describes it as both countable and uncountable. The Oxford Dictionary describes it as a mass noun, therefore uncountable.
