About World Culture Festival
● In 2016, the Art of Living completes 35 years of service to humanity. To commemorate this momentous occasion, the World Culture Festival is being organized from 11 to 13, March 2016 in New Delhi, India.
● 3.5 million people from 155 countries are expected to congregate at the festival.
● Why should you be there at WCF?
According to Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, founder, Art of Living, “Purpose of WCF is to give the world a message that the whole world is one family. The second is, to give a message that we can all co-exist with our differences. Third is, it is an opportunity for religious leaders, businessmen, politicians-everyone to come together and renew their vision to work for the welfare of the society. The forth would be, to encourage the traditional musicians. The idea is to give a platform for people from every country who have been preserving the folk dances and music, for everyone else to relish and enjoy that. This is something that will really bring the values which are going into the background, to the forefront. The fifth is, to give this world a message that there are good people in this planet and that these people are dynamic, they are active and they care for the planet”
● A unique platform will be created for spiritual and religious leaders, politicians, peacemakers and artists to spread the message of global peace and harmony in diversity.
● By showcasing the rich cultural traditions of dance, music and the arts from around the world as well as Yoga, the Festival hopes to foster a deeper understanding between people of different faiths, nationalities and backgrounds.
Interesting facts about the event
● Over 35,973 artists are expected to perform in the World Culture Festival
● The Global Leadership Forum, co-hosted by the World Forum of Ethics in Business and The Art of Living Foundation in New Delhi on the 12th and 13th March 2016 will bring together senior leaders from business, government, politics, science, NGOs, faith-based organizations, sports, academia and media to reflect on the paradigms of leadership needed to maneuver the world of today.
● World’s largest stage-WCF will witness the world’s largest oval shaped stage set up over an area of 7 acres, which equals about 2.5 FIFA grounds. This will be an attempt to enter the Guinness Book of World Records for the ‘Largest temporary stage’ in the world.
● The lowest step is at 6 ft high and the highest is at 47 ft. There are about 22 steps
● Size of the venue- The total area of the venue would cover a 1000 acres.
● Over 1000 people are working on stage and venue development.
● More than 20,000 (tentative) international guests are expected. Sizable contingents from South America, Mangolia, Russia, U.S., Europe, Japan, Malaysia, Australia, Pakistan among others.
● Revival of tribal art forms-WCF will revive some of the tribal art forms from India from states like Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, Sikkim among others.
● World’s largest Peace meditation- This will be the first time in the world that 3.5 million people will meditate for world peace on all three days at one physical location. Millions will also participate virtually.
● For the Grand Art of Living Symphony, the tracks have been sent out to more than 8000 participants for rehearsals.
● For the dance performances, each state has been assigned a choreographer. States have decided on the dates for rehearsals with all the participants assembled at one place. For example, Gujarat will do its final rehearsals on 7 Mar with 2000 people In Ahmedabad. Chattisgarh is doing the Kathi Dance and the participants will assemble in Raipur on 6,7,8th February. They will do the Happiness Program simultaneously. They will travel together from Raipur.
● Coordination effort-Participants are being sent the tracks and dance steps to practice indivuidually. They have started practicing.The state co-ordinators are moving from district to district to monitor the practice sessions.
● For Bharatnatyam 3 Padma awardees are training the participants.
● 650 drummers will arrive from South Africa. The drums were shipped in October 2015. They reached Bombay Port and now they are being shipped to Delhi.

He realized that our present educational system was accessible and open to the rich and those from the creamy layer, while the underprivileged are priced out of the institutions for want of money. He felt strongly that the Muslim community would be throwing away great opportunities, casting adrift its future, if it does not acquire a strong knowledge and economic base powered by Information Technology, innovation and modern education.
Consequently, Beg Sahib established educational institutions in his native district Azamgarh for spreading education among children who were deprived of modern education due to poverty, exploitation and religious extremism.
He tried to engender a social conscience for the upliftment of the weaker sections of the society. He, therefore, conceived the concept of micro-financing and established Jamia Cooperative Bank Limited. This venture came as a great beacon of light and hope to the downtrodden segment of society which had been seared in the flames of withering injustice. He had a dream that one day this section of the society, sweltering in the heat of poverty and injustice, will be transformed into an oasis of peace, prosperity and justice. The path he chose was full of hazards but was the most consistent with the character and courage of his community and his commitments around it. Thus, whatever he has left with us, is what he said, and what he did, and what he stood for.

ترجمہ - ہندی मिर्ज़ा फ़रीदुल हसन बेग जनहितैषी, शिक्षाविद, सफ़ल बैंकर, और इन सबसे बढ़ कर एक अच्छे इंसान थे. वह अपने आप में एक संस्था थे. वह इस बात को अच्छी तरह महसूस करते थे कि देश की शिक्षा-प्रणाली केवल अमीरों और धनी लोगों को ध्यान में रख कर बनाई गयी है. ग़रीब चाह कर भी वहाँ तक नहीं पहुँच सकते, क्योंकि उनके पास इतने पैसे नहीं होते कि वह इन स्कूलों या कालेजों की फ़ीस सहन कर सकें. दूसरी तरफ़, उन्हें ख़ुद अपने समाज की चिंता भी सताए जा रही थी कि अगर मुसलमानों ने अपने आपको सूचना प्रौद्योगिकी, नई खोज और आधुनिक शिक्षा से लैस नहीं किया, तो विकास की दौङ में वे दूसरों से काफ़ी पीछे रह जाएंगे तथा भविष्य के सुनहरे अवसरों को खो देंगे. यही वजह थी कि उन्होंने अपने पैतृक ज़िला, आज़मगढ़ में उन बच्चों के लिए शैक्षिक संस्थान खोले, जो ग़रीबी, शोषण तथा धार्मिक उग्रवाद के चलते आधुनिक शिक्षा से वंचित थे.
समाज के पिछङे वर्गों को विकास की राह पर अग्रसर करने के लिए मिर्ज़ा फ़रीदुल हसन बेग ने उनके अंदर सामाजिक जागरूकता पैदा करने की भी कोशिश की. इसीलिए उनके मन में माइक्रोफ़ाइनैंसिंग का विचार आया और उन्होंने जामिया कोऑप्रेटिव बैंक लिमिटेड की स्थापना की. यह बैंक उन ग़रीब व बेसहारा लोगों के लिए आशा की एक किरण लेकर आया, जो नाइंसाफ़ी की मार झेल रहे थे और असहाय जीवन व्यतीत करने पर मजबूर थे. उनका एक सपना था कि हमारे समुदाय का सबसे कमज़ोर यह वर्ग, जो ग़रीबी और नाइंसाफ़ी की मार से बदहाल था, एक दिन सुख, शांति और इंसाफ़ का केंद्र बनेगा. उन्होंने जो रास्ता चुना, वह काँटों भरा था, लेकिन मुसलमानों के चरित्र और उनके उत्साह के अनुकूल था. इसमें ख़ुद बेग साहब का साहस और हौसला पूरी शक्ति के साथ शामिल था. अतः उन्होंने हमारे लिए वही छोङा, जिसका उन्होंने वादा किया, फिर उसको सत्यता का रूप दिया और जीवन भर उस पर चलते रहे.

ترجمہ - انگریزی Today, I have initiated the campaign to clean the Ganga Ghat in Varanasi. The social organisations set in the city assured me that they will clean the Ghat within a month. I believe, this will be a rare gift that would have come through cleanliness in many years. Today, when I’m expanding the sanitation campaign in my parliamentary constituency, Varanasi, I will nominate nine people and each of them, after doing their bit of work, will nominate another nine people. When I did sanitation work in Delhi, I did nominate nine people as well. Today again, I am nominating following nine people closely related to Uttar Pradesh:

منبع کا متن - اردو بھاما بائی اپنی دُکان میں بیٹھی ہوئی ایک چپّل کی مرمت کر رہی ہیں، جب کہ موچی کے ذریعہ استعمال کیا جانے والا لوہے کا سِندان ان کے سامنے زمین پر رکھا ہوا ہے۔ مدد کے طورپر لکڑی کے ایک مستطیل ٹکڑے کو استعمال کرتے ہوئے، وہ اپنے پیر کے بڑے انگوٹھے سے کھلی چپل کے سرے کو پکڑے ہوئی ہیں۔ اس کے بعد وہ سوئی کو اندر گھساتی ہیں اور دھاگے کو پروتے ہوئے، اسے باہر کھینچتی ہیں۔ چھ بار اسی طرح کرنے کے بعد، ٹوٹا ہوا پھندا ٹھیک ہو جاتا ہے، جس سے ان کی پانچ روپے کی کمائی ہوتی ہے۔

انھیں جو بھی کام مل جاتا، وہ اسے کرنے لگتے، چاہے وہ سڑک کی تعمیر کا کام ہو یا پھر عمارتیں بنانے کا کام۔ اُس زمانے میں پُنے کے اندر ایک مزدور کو دن بھر کام کرنے کے بدلے دو سے پانچ روپے تک کی مزدوری ملتی تھی۔ بھاما بائی، جو اَب ۷۰ سال کی ہو چکی ہیں، بتاتی ہیں، ’’میں جو کچھ کماتی تھی، وہ اپنے شوہر کو دے دیتی تھی۔ وہ اس پیسے سے شراب پی کر میری پٹائی کرتے تھے۔‘‘ بعد میں ان کے شوہر نے انھیں چھوڑ دیا، اور اب پُنے کے قریب اپنی دوسری بیوی اور بچوں کے ساتھ رہتا ہے۔ ’’میرے لیے وہ مر چکا ہے۔ اسے مجھ کو چھوڑے ہوئے ۳۵ سال ہو چکے ہیں۔‘‘ بھاما بائی کے بھی دو بچے ہوتے، اگر وہ پیدائش کے وقت ہی ختم نہ ہو گئے ہوتے۔ وہ کہتی ہیں، ’’میرے ساتھ کوئی نہیں ہے، میرا کوئی مددگار نہیں ہے۔‘‘
شوہر کے چھوڑ کر چلے جانے کے بعد، بھاما بائی نے جوتے چپل کی مرمت کرنے کے لیے جھونپڑی نما ایک دُکان کھولی، انھوں نے یہ کام اپنے والد سے سیکھا تھا۔ یہ دُکان پُنے کی کروے روڈ کے آخری سرے پر ایک چھوٹی سی گلی میں، ایک ہاؤسنگ کالونی کے قریب ہے۔ ’’میونسپل ورکرس نے اسے ڈھا دیا تھا۔ لہٰذا میں نے اسے دوبارہ بنایا ہے۔ انھوں نے اسے دوبارہ توڑ دیا۔‘‘ بھاما بائی نے نا امید ہو کر اُس کالونی میں رہنے والوں سے مدد مانگی۔ ’’میں نے اُن سے کہا کہ میرے پاس کہیں اور جانے کے لیے جگہ نہیں ہے۔ نہ ہی میرے پاس کرنے کے لیے کوئی اور کام ہے۔‘‘ وہ آگے آئے اور انھوں نے میونسپل اتھارٹیز سے بات کی، اور اس طرح انھیں یہاں اپنے کام کو جاری رکھنے کی اجازت مل گئی۔
وہ کہتی ہیں کہ زندگی بہت سخت ہے۔ ’’اگر کوئی گاہک آتا ہے، تو مجھے پانچ یا چھ روپے ملتے ہیں۔ اگر کوئی نہیں آتا، تو میں شام تک یونہی بیٹھی رہتی ہوں۔ اس کے بعد میں گھر چلی جاتی ہوں۔ یہی آج کل میری زندگی ہے۔ کبھی کبھی تو میں ایک دن میں تیس روپے اور کبھی پچاس روپے بھی کما لیتی ہوں، لیکن اکثر میرا ہاتھ خالی ہی رہتا ہے۔‘‘
کیا وہ نیا جوتا بنا سکتی ہیں؟ ’’نہ، نہیں۔ میں نہیں جانتی کہ جوتا کیسے بنایا جاتا ہے۔ میں صرف ٹوٹے ہوئے جوتے چپل ٹھیک کرتی ہوں۔ میں جوتوں کو پالش کر سکتی ہوں، اور ان کی ایڑیوں اور تلووں کو درست کر سکتی ہوں۔‘‘
دو اور چمار، دونوں ہی مرد ہیں، ان کی دُکانیں بھاما بائی کی دُکان سے چند گز کی دوری پر واقع ہیں۔ وہ اونچی قیمت لیتے ہیں، اور ان کا دعویٰ ہے کہ وہ روزانہ ۲۰۰۔۴۰۰ روپے کما لیتے ہیں، بعض دفعہ اس سے بھی زیادہ۔
بھاما بائی اوزاروں کا اپنا بھورا بکسہ کھولتی ہیں۔ ڈھکن کے اندرونی حصے کے اوپر انھوں نے دیوی دیوتاؤں کی تصویریں لگا رکھی ہیں۔ اوپری ٹرے میں چار خانے ہیں، جن میں دھاگے اور کیلیں رکھی ہوئی ہیں۔ اس کے نیچے چمڑے کاٹنے اور اس کی سلائی وغیرہ سے متعلق اوزار ہیں۔ وہ انھیں باہر نکالتی ہیں۔
’’آپ نے میرے اوزاروں کی تصویریں کھینچ لیں۔ لیکن کیا آپ نے میری دیویوں کی تصویریں لیں؟‘‘ وہ پوچھتی ہیں۔ ایسا لگتا ہے کہ یہی وہ دیویاں ہیں، جنھیں وہ اپنا کہہ سکتی ہیں۔
شام کے وقت جب وہ اپنا کام ختم کرتی ہیں، تو سارے اوزار بکسے میں واپس رکھ دیے جاتے ہیں، جس میں اسٹیل کا وہ گلاس بھی شامل ہے، جس سے وہ پانی پیتی ہیں۔ سِندان، لکڑی کا ٹکڑا، دیگر چھوٹے سامان جیسے چپس کا پیکٹ، اور کچھ پیسوں والا کپڑے کا ایک چھوٹا سا بٹوا، سبھی چیزیں مضبوطی سے سلی ہوئی پٹ سن کی بوری میں ڈال دی جاتی ہیں۔ بکسے اور بوری کو سڑک کے اُس پار فاسٹ فوڈ ریستوراں کے باہر تالے سے بند دھات کی ایک کوٹھری میں رکھ دیاجاتا ہے۔ وہ کہتی ہیں، ’’بھگوان اس قسم کے چھوٹے چھوٹے کاموں میں میری مدد کرتے ہیں، وہ لوگ مجھے اپنی چیزیں وہاں رکھنے کی اجازت دیتے ہیں۔‘‘
بھاما بائی شاستری نگر میں رہتی ہیں، جو کہ اُن کی اس چھوٹی سی دُکان سے تقریباً پانچ کلومیٹر دور ہے۔ ’’میں ہر روز، صبح اور شام کو پیدل چلتی ہوں، آنے جانے میں ایک طرف سے ایک گھنٹہ لگتا ہے۔ راستے میں میں کئی بار ٹھہرتی ہوں، درد کرتے گھٹنوں اور پیٹھ کو آرام دینے کے لیے میں سڑک کے کنارے کہیں پر بھی بیٹھ جاتی ہوں۔ ایک دن میں نے آٹورکشہ کیا، جس پر میرے تقریباً ۴۰ روپے خرچ ہو گئے۔ ایک دن کی کمائی چلی گئی۔‘‘ کبھی کبھار فاسٹ فوڈ ریسٹوراں میں کام کرنے والا ڈلیوری بوائے ان کو آدھے راستے تک اپنی موٹر سائیکل پر لِفٹ دے دیتا ہے۔
اُن کا گھر دُکان سے تھوڑا ہی بڑا ہے، آٹھ بائی آٹھ فیٹ کا کمرہ۔ شام کو ۷ بج کر ۱۵ منٹ پر اُس کمرے میں گھپ اندھیرا ہے۔ اندر تیل کا ایک چھوٹا سا دیپک جل رہا ہے، جس سے ہلکی سی روشنی آ رہی ہے۔ ’’ٹھیک ویسا ہی لیمپ جو کاناگارا گاؤں میں ہمارے گھر میں تھا،‘‘ وہ بتاتی ہیں۔ یہاں بجلی نہیں ہے۔ ان کا کنیکشن کاٹ دیا گیا تھا، کیوں کہ بجلی کا بل بھرنے کے لیے ان کے پاس پیسہ نہیں تھا۔
فرنیچر کے نام پر صرف لوہے کا ایک بیڈ ہے، جس پر کوئی دری بھی نہیں ہے؛ اس سے دوہرا کام لیا جاتا ہے، اسے کھڑا کرکے دھلے ہوئے برتن اس پر سُکھائے جاتے ہیں۔ ایک دیوار پر پھٹکنا لٹکا ہوا ہے۔ پکانے کی جگہ پر کچھ برتن اور ٹن کے ڈبے رکھے ہوئے ہیں۔ ’’میرے پاس ایک اسٹوو ہے، جسے میں اس وقت تک استعمال کر سکتی ہوں، جب تک اس میں ایک لیٹر مٹی کا تیل چلتا ہے۔ اس کے بعد میں اگلے مہینے تک انتظار کرتی ہوں، تاکہ اپنے راشن کارڈ سے تیل خرید سکوں۔‘‘
بھاما بائی کی بانہہ پر آگے کی طرف ایک بڑا سا ٹیٹو بنا ہوا ہے، جس پر دیوی دیوتاؤں کے فوٹو بنے ہوئے ہیں اور اُن کے شوہر، والد، بھائی، ماں، بہن، اور ان کا عرفی نام لکھا ہوا ہے۔ یہ ہمیشہ رہنے والا نیلے رنگ کا ٹھپا ہے۔
برسوں سے مزدوری کرنے کی وجہ سے وہ کافی تھک چکی ہیں، پھر بھی وہ خود بین اور آزاد ہیں۔ ان کے دو بھائی اسی شہر میں رہتے ہیں، ایک بہن گاؤں میں ہے، جب کہ دوسری ممبئی میں رہتی ہے۔ ان سب کی اپنی اپنی فیملی ہے۔ گاؤں کے اس کے رشتہ دار جب پُنے آتے ہیں، تو تھوڑی دیر کے لیے اس کی دُکان پر بھی ٹھہرتے ہیں۔
’’لیکن میں کبھی اُن لوگوں سے ملنے نہیں گئی،‘‘ وہ بتاتی ہیں۔ ’’میں اپنا درد اُن میں سے کسی سے نہیں بانٹتی۔ میں آپ کو یہ سب اس لیے بتا رہی ہوں، کیو ں کہ آپ نے مجھ سے یہ سب پوچھا۔ اِس دنیا میں، ہر کسی کو اپنا نباہ خود ہی کرنا ہے۔‘‘
جس وقت ہم ان کی دُکان میں بیٹھے ہوئے تھے، ایک عورت اندر جھانکتی ہے اور ایک چھوٹا پلاسٹک بیگ تھما کر چلی جاتی ہے۔ بھاما بائی مسکراتی ہیں: ’’میری کچھ سہیلیاں ہیں، یہ وہ عورتیں ہیں جو دوسروں کے گھروں میں کام کرتی ہیں۔ بعض دفعہ انھیں کام کرنے کی جگہ پر بچا ہوا جو کھانا ملتا ہے، وہ مجھے دے جاتی ہیں۔‘‘
ایک گاہک مرمت کے لیے اپنا چمڑے کا ایک کالا جوتا اور دو جوڑے برانڈیڈ فوٹ گیئرس چھوڑ جاتا ہے۔ ایک ایک کرکے وہ سب کو سِل کر درست کرتی ہیں، اور چمڑے کے کالے جوتے کو پالش کرتی ہیں۔ ایک جوڑی کے صرف ۱۶ روپے لے کر، وہ ان پرانے جوتوں میں نئی جان ڈال دیتی ہیں، جب کہ ان جوتوں کی کبھی مہنگی قیمت ہوا کرتی تھی۔ ان کی مرمت کرکے انھوں نے اپنے گاہک کو اسی برانڈ کے نئے جوتوں پر ہزاروں روپے خرچ کرنے سے بچا لیا۔ لیکن اگر انھیں یہ معلوم ہوتا، تب بھی وہ اسے ظاہر نہیں کرتیں۔ وہ صرف ٹوٹے ہوئے تلووں کی مرمت کر رہی ہیں۔

Using a rectangular block of wood as support, she holds down the open slipper at the edge with her big toe. She then pushes in the needle and, looping the thread, pulls it out. With six iterations, the broken strap is fixed – earning her five rupees.
Meet Bhamabai Mastood, a leather worker, commonly called a cobbler, living in near penury. Decades ago, she and her husband were landless labourers in Osmanabad district of the Marathwada region. When the great drought of 1972 ravaged Maharashtra, decimated agricultural work, and dried up their livelihoods, both came to Pune.
They took up any work that came their way, on roads or in building construction. A day’s labour brought two to five rupees during those times in Pune. “I gave all that I earned to my husband. He would drink and beat me up,” Bhamabai, now around 70, says. The husband eventually abandoned her, and now lives with his other wife and children near Pune. “For me, he is as good as dead. It has been 35 years since he left.” Bhamabai would have had two children herself had she not lost them at birth. “There is no one with me, I have no support,” she says.
After her husband left, Bhamabai set up a small shanty shop for footwear repair, a skill she had learned from her father. The shop is in a small lane off Pune’s Karve Road, adjoining a housing colony. “It was demolished by municipal workers. So I rebuilt it. They broke it down again.”
In despair, Bhamabai asked the residents of the colony for help. “I told them I had nowhere else to go. Nothing else to do.” They stepped in, spoke to the municipal authorities, and she continues working there.
Life is very difficult, she says. “If I get a customer I make five or ten rupees. If nobody comes, I just sit here till the evening. Then I go home. That is my life now. Some days I make thirty rupees, sometimes fifty. Often, I make nothing.”
Can she make a new shoe? “No, no. I don’t know how to do that. I only repair what is broken. I can polish shoes, and hammer in a heel and sole.”
Two other leather workers, both men, have shops some yards away from Bhamabai’s. Their rates are higher, and they claim to make Rs. 200-400 every day, sometimes more.
Bhamabai opens her brown toolbox. On the inside of the lid, she has stuck pictures of goddesses. The top tray is partitioned into four sections and holds threads and nails. Beneath it are the leather craft tools. She lays them out.
“You’ve taken photos of my tools. But did you take a picture of my goddesses?” she asks. It seems they are the only ones she can call her own.
At the end of her work day, everything goes back into the toolbox, including a steel tumbler she uses to drink water. The anvil, the piece of wood, other small items like a packet of chips, and a tiny cloth bundle with some money, all go into a tightly-knotted gunny sack. The box and the sack are kept in a locked metal closet outside a fast food restaurant across the road. “God helps me in these small ways, they let me keep my things there,” she says.
Bhamabai lives in Shastri Nagar, about five kilometres from her tiny shop. “I walk every day, morning and evening, an hour each time. I stop many times on the way, and sit somewhere along the road to rest my aching knees and back. One day I took an autorickshaw. It cost me nearly 40 rupees. A day’s earning was gone.” Sometimes one of the delivery boys from the fast food restaurant might give her a lift on his bike for part of the way.
Her home is barely bigger than the shop, an eight-by-eight feet room. It is pitch dark inside at 7.15 p.m. with only a little light from an oil lamp.” Just like the lamp we had in my home in Kanagara village,” she says. There is no electricity. Her connection was cut as she could not pay the dues.
An iron bed without a mattress is the only furniture; it doubles up as a stand for drying washed utensils. A winnow hangs on one wall. The cooking platform has some utensils and tins. “I have a stove, which I can use as long as one litre of kerosene lasts. Then I wait till the next month to buy it on my ration card.”
Bhamabai has a large tattoo on her forearm of small figures of deities and the names of her husband, father, brother, mother, sister, and her surname. All permanently etched in blue.
Though exhausted from years of labour she is pragmatic and independent. She has two brothers in the city, one sister in the village and another in Mumbai. All her siblings have families. Relatives from her village sometimes drop by her shop when they are in Pune.
“But I have never gone to visit any of them,” she says. “I don’t share my plight with anyone. I am telling you everything because you have asked me. In this world, each one has to fend for themselves.”
While we are sitting in her shop, a woman looks in and hands over a small plastic bag. Bhamabai smiles: “I have a few friends, women who are domestic workers. Sometimes they share the leftovers they get at work with me.”
A customer leaves his black leather shoes and two pairs of branded sports footgear for repair. One by one, she stitches them into shape, and polishes the black leather. For just Rs.16 a pair, Bhamabai infuses new life into those worn-out, once-expensive shoes. By repairing them, she has saved the customer from spending a few thousand rupees on a new pair of that grade. But if she knows that, she doesn’t show it. All she is doing is mending broken soles.
