The introduction of these new seed varieties around the world was known as the Green Revolution. In Pakistan, the United States worked with agriculture experts and farmers not only to adopt some of these varieties, but also to dramatically increase the use of fertilizer and improve water management.

A Brief History of Microfinance
The beginning: 1976**
Mohammed Yunus had just returned to his native Bangladesh. He earned a PhD in Economics from Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tennessee. He went on to teach economics in a university in his home country, Bangladesh.
As he traveled the crowded streets to work everyday, he heard the beggars and craft sellers trying to make their daily wages. They were poor and hungry, and had families to support, but were struggling for even basic needs. The situation was almost identical to that of India’s after the British had left. The country was free, but poor.
"Hunger is the worst form of deprivation for a human being. What good is my teaching if people are starving?", asked Yunus. On one of his trips to school, he met Sufia, a 21-year-old woman, mother of three children, who made a living by making bamboo baskets and selling them through a distributor. The distributor had to pay off a lot of loans for raw materials and to others he had borrowed from, which meant he did not have enough money to give Sufia
Yunus thought that if only she had 10 dollars to invest in supplies, she would pay her debts, she would have working capital and, in addition, her own source of employment. He shared these observations with his students at the university. He asked them to go out into the streets and ask people how much they would need as a loan to get ahead. The average response was set at $27. Mohammed lent the money to Sufía and more artisans, capital that came out of his pocket.
He went to banks and the government, but they did not agree to help. They said, “Who would want to lend money to those who can not afford it?” However, after a few weeks, the people who had received the $27 returned to cover their debt. Yunus received the full capital and re-invested it in more artisans. The money was growing and the aid expanded to reach 100 villages. That first loan and repayment cycle was the seed of the Grameen Bank, the institution that Mohamad Yunus formed, dedicated to low-income citizens.

انہیں ہر روزپرہجوم گلیوں سے گذرتے ہوئے اپنے کام پر جانا پڑتا تھا جس کے دوران وہ گداگروں اور ٹھیلے والوں کو اپنا روزگار کمانے کیلئے صدائیں لگاتے سنا کرتے تھے۔وہ لوگ غریب اور فاقہ کش تھے اور انہیں اپنے خاندانوں کی کفالت کرنا پڑتی تھی لیکن حالت یہ تھی کہ انہیں اپنی بنیادی ضروریات کیلئے بھی جدوجہد کرنا پڑتی تھی۔یہ صورتحال اس وقت کے ہندوستان سے ملتی جلتی تھی جب انگریز اسے چھوڑ کر گئے تھے۔ملک آزاد تو تھا لیکن غریب بھی تھا۔
’’ بنی نوع انسان کیلئے بھوک محرومی کی بدترین صورت ہے۔میرا پڑھانے کا کیا فائدہ اگر لوگ فاقہ کشی کررہے ہیں؟‘‘، یونس نے خود سے سوال کیا۔
ایک بار سکول جاتے ہوئے ان کا21 سالہ صوفیہ سے سامنا ہواجو تین بچوں کی ماں تھی اوراپنا گھر بار چلانے کیلئے بانس کی ٹوکریاں بناکر ایک تقسیم کار کے ذریعے فروخت کرتی تھی۔تقسیم کار کو خام مال خریدنے اور ادھار واپس کرنے کیلئے بہت کا قرضہ چکانا پڑتا تھا جس کا مطلب یہ تھا کہ اس کے پاس صوفیہ کو ادا کرنے کیلئے زیادہ رقم نہیں بچتی تھی۔
محمد یونس نے سوچا کہ اگر اس کے پاس سپلائی میں لگانے کیلئے صرف دس ڈالر ہوتے تو وہ اپنے قرضے بھی ادا کرسکتی تھی اوراس کے پاس اپنی راس یعنی کام چلانے کیلئے سرمایہ بھی ہوتامزید یہ کہ اس کے پاس روزگار کیلئے اپنا ذریعہ بھی ہوتا۔اس نے یونیورسٹی میں اپنے طالبعلموں کو اپنے ان خیالات سے آگاہ کیا۔اس نے انہیں کہا کہ وہ گلی کوچوں میں جائیں اور لوگوں سے معلوم کریں کہ انہیں اپنا کام چلانے کیلئے قرض کی صورت میں کتنی رقم کی ضرورت ہوگی۔اس پر جو درکار رقم کی اوسط نکلی وہ27 ڈالر تھی۔محمد یونس نے صوفیہ اور چند اور ہنرمندوں کو اپنی جیب سے رقم بطور قرض ادا کی۔
اس نے بنکوں اور حکومت کے ساتھ رابطہ کیا لیکن کوئی بھی اس کی مدد پر آمادہ نہ ہوا۔ان کا کہنا تھا، ’’ایسے لوگوں کو کون قرض دے گا جو اسے واپس کرنے کی سکت نہیں رکھتے؟‘‘
تاہم دوسری جانب چند ہی ہفتوں بعد جن لوگوں نے27 ڈالر کا قرض وصول کیا تھا وہ اس کی واپسی کیلئے آنا شروع ہوگئے۔یونس کو اس کا تمام سرمایہ واپس مل گیا تھا جسے اس نے کچھ اور ہنر مندوں میں تقسیم کردیا۔رقم بڑھتی جارہی تھی یہاں تک کہ امداد کا دائرہ 100 دیہات تک پھیل گیا۔یہی پہلا قرضہ اور واپس ادائیگی کا سائیکل گرامین بنک کی بنیاد بنا۔یہ وہ ادارہ ہے جسے محمد یونس نے کم آمدنی کے حامل شہریوں کو اپنے قدموں پر کھڑا ہونے میں مدد دینے کیلئے تشکیل دیا۔
