Hi,
I'm a novice to Trados and I received a .dat file to transalte from
English into Italian. Do you have any clue huw I can tranlsate it? Do
you advise to use Tworkbench and just manage it as a document file?
How can I clean up the document if I just translate the content
keeping the original format? I can see that cleaning up documents is
only possible for .rtf ore .doc files and when I try to clean up the .dat file it says something like: file not foud. Doe... See more

Hello,
you should first analyse the correct file type.

Maybe it will be good, if you rename the file to *.txt and open the file in WinWord. Often you can find some more information in the header. Maybe your file is a text file. Than you can save the file as a rtf file and work with it. After translation and clean up you should save the translation as a text file. Ask you client if he wants ANSI (only text) or ASCII coded files (MS-DOS text). If you can't find the correct file ... See more

Thanks Hans for your reply.
I asked the client and it came out that the .dat file was the result of a conversion of a Mac application file. They explained they were interested in having it back in .doc format. So I managed to translate and clean up the file using the standard Trados features.
Hope this may help someone help in the future...
